Zuma 50F (2012-2018): "A Shock to Tuning Enthusiasts" — Yamaha Kills the Last Japanese 50cc Two-Stroke
Best Beginner Motorcycles' own retrospective doesn't soften the significance of this change: "the Zuma was the last 2-stroke 50cc from a Japanese manufacturer," and the 2012 revision replaced it entirely — "virtually all new for 2012... this new Zuma features updated styling and a four stroke motor, which was a shock to tuning enthusiasts." Motorcycle.com's own review found the styling changes deliberately subtle by design: Yamaha's own focus groups specifically told the company not to touch the beloved twin bug-eye headlights, so the third-generation Zuma looks remarkably similar to its two-stroke predecessor at a glance, despite an entirely different engine underneath.
Power comes from a 49cc SOHC liquid-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke, running 3 valves and fuel injection in place of the old carbureted, air-cooled two-stroke — a genuine ground-up powertrain replacement rather than an emissions retrofit. Motorcycle.com's review notes roller rocker arms were added specifically to reduce internal friction, contributing to smoother power delivery and meaningfully better fuel economy than the outgoing two-stroke, which was the other top priority Yamaha's focus groups flagged alongside styling. The "F" suffix added to the model name specifically denotes this new four-stroke firing order, a genuine designation change from the smaller-tank, carbureted YW50 that came before it.
The chassis carries over a steel tube frame with a 42mm traditional telescopic fork up front and a single left-side-mounted shock at the rear, riding on 10-inch alloy wheels with a 180mm front disc (hydraulic caliper) and a rear drum brake. A 23-litre (6-gallon) under-seat storage compartment swallows a full-face helmet, and Motorcycle.com's review specifically calls out the reworked ergonomics: a flatter, broader seat replacing the old model's forward-sloped riding position, giving both rider and passenger noticeably more room. Best Beginner Motorcycles notes one genuine trade-off from the switch: the fuel tank shrank from 1.5 to 1.2 gallons, though the four-stroke's superior mileage keeps real-world range roughly comparable to the old two-stroke despite the smaller tank. This 2012-2018 generation carried forward largely unchanged year to year, with pricing climbing from $2,599 CAD in 2013 to $2,799 by 2017.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2012-2018 Zuma 50F running the way it was built to.
