Yamaha YZF-R1M (2020-2024): The Carbon-Bodied, Öhlins-Equipped Track Superbike

The R1M is the track-focused, “dripping with goodies” version of Yamaha’s R1, sold since 2015 in small numbers and aimed at riders who want factory-level equipment. The 2020 update gave it the R1’s reworked Euro 5 engine, chassis, styling and electronics, with the R1M’s own extras: Öhlins Electronic Racing Suspension (ERS) with the new NPX gas-charged fork and a TTX36 rear shock, MotoGP-inspired carbon fiber bodywork and a carbon tail, a polished tank and swingarm and a wider 200-section rear tire. The ERS system works with the IMU and a dedicated suspension control unit that adjusts the front and rear damping in real time while braking, cornering or accelerating. It comes with a standard Communication Control Unit (CCU) that logs data with GPS, with course mapping, automatic lap timing and Yamaha Ride Control adjustment from a phone. The R1M was an $8,700 premium over the R1 at launch.

The engine is the same as the R1’s: a 998cc liquid-cooled DOHC inline four with the crossplane crank, four valves per cylinder, a 79mm x 50.9mm bore and stroke and a 13.0:1 compression ratio. YCC-T ride-by-wire and YCC-I variable intake fuel it. Yamaha claims about 200 PS (147 kW, 197-198 hp in US figures) at 13,500 rpm and 113.3 Nm (83 lb-ft) of torque at 11,500 rpm. The gearbox is a six-speed with a wet multi-plate assist and slipper clutch and chain final drive.

The front suspension is a 43mm Öhlins NPX inverted fork with Electronic Racing Suspension and about 4.7 inches (120mm) of travel, and the rear is an Öhlins ERS shock with a bottom-link linkage and 4.7 inches of travel. Brakes are dual 320mm front discs and a 220mm rear disc with the Brake Control System and ABS. Tires are Bridgestone Battlax Racing Street RS11, a 120/70ZR17 at the front and a 200/55ZR17 at the rear. Rake is 24 degrees, with the wheelbase at about 1,405mm and ground clearance at about 130mm (5.1 inches).

The R1M is about 2,055mm (80.9 inches) long, 690mm wide and 1,165mm (45.9 inches) high. Seat height is 855-860mm (33.7-33.9 inches). The tank holds 17 litres (4.5 gallons), and the oil tank holds about 4.9 litres. The R1M weighs about 202-204 kg (445-450 lbs) wet.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a YZF-R1M running the way it was built to.
