YZF-R1/R1M (2015-2019): "A Street-Legal MotoGP Machine," Built With Valentino Rossi's Input

Ultimate Motorcycling's own launch coverage from Yamaha's Fukuroi test course captures the ambition directly: the concept behind the all-new 2015 R1 and its R1M sibling was "pure Supersport from the highest technology" — in other words, a genuine street-legal MotoGP machine, built using Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo's YZR-M1 as the actual development basis rather than just marketing inspiration. Bennetts' own buying guide confirms just how far this generation shifted from its predecessor: where the earlier crossplane R1 was road-focused with relaxed power delivery, "in 2015 this all changed" — a genuine track-first reinvention, not an evolution.

Power comes from an all-new CP4 crossplane 998cc inline-four, MCN's own review detailing the engineering behind the gains: a shorter-stroke, higher-compression design with a new cylinder head, reshaped intake ports, titanium connecting rods and exhaust, lightweight forged aluminum pistons with diamond-like-carbon-coated gudgeon pins, bigger valves with a DLC rocker-arm valvetrain, and a 24% larger airbox, delivering a claimed 197-200 hp — up 18 hp over the outgoing generation, with a titanium fracture-split connecting rod design Yamaha's own release called an industry first for a production motorcycle. A 13:1 compression ratio and a servo-controlled EXUP valve opening past 7,500 rpm help the engine breathe at genuinely high rpm, run through a lightweight assist-and-slipper clutch and 6-speed gearbox.

Electronics took the biggest leap of any R1 generation to date: a new six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), developed using the same approach as the YZR-M1 MotoGP bike, feeds lean-angle-aware traction control, slide control, wheelie control, and launch control — genuine race-derived electronics rather than a simple traction-control add-on. The R1M, released simultaneously as a genuine range-topping sibling (a nod to the M1 MotoGP name), added semi-active Öhlins Electronic Racing Suspension and carbon-fiber bodywork, along with a built-in data logger for track-day analysis — at launch, a scary £18,499/roughly $3,500 premium over the base bike, sold through an online-only booking system that only heightened its exclusivity. MCN's own review is candid about the resulting character: "it's not the smooth, cuddly R1 of old, it's an unashamedly aggressive, angry, fighty race-focussed superbike" — a genuinely different animal from every prior generation, one that traded easy low-end tractability for outright track capability. This platform ran through 2019 with only detail refinements before further evolution in later years, right up to Yamaha's February 2024 announcement discontinuing the R1 entirely due to tightening emissions rules.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2015-2019 YZF-R1/R1M running the way it was built to.
