Yamaha YZF-R1 (2020-2024): The MotoGP-Derived Crossplane Superbike

The R1 is Yamaha’s MotoGP-derived superbike, built around the 998cc crossplane-crankshaft inline-four (the “CP4”) that descends directly from the YZR-M1 race engine, with aerodynamic bodywork that comes straight from racetrack development. The 2020 update kept the same power and torque while making the engine Euro 5 compliant, with a slightly reshaped intake and a slightly less muffled exhaust. It’s a very electronic machine, with a six-axis IMU, traction control, slide control, wheelie control, launch control, a Brake Control System with ABS, a quickshifter and Yamaha’s YCC-T ride-by-wire and YCC-I variable-length intake. The chassis is an aluminum twin-spar frame (Deltabox) with fully adjustable KYB suspension at both ends. The R1 tops out at about 186 mph, which is a lot for a road bike.

The engine is a 998cc liquid-cooled DOHC inline four with four valves per cylinder (16 in all), a 79mm x 50.9mm bore and stroke and a 13.0:1 compression ratio, with fuel injection. Yamaha claims about 200 PS (147 kW, 198 hp in US figures) at 13,500 rpm and 113.3 Nm (83.6 lb-ft) of torque at 11,500 rpm. The gearbox is a six-speed with a wet multi-plate assist and slipper clutch and chain final drive.

The front suspension is a 43mm KYB inverted fork, fully adjustable, with about 4.7 inches (120mm) of travel, and the rear is a KYB single shock, fully adjustable, with 4.7 inches of travel. Brakes are dual 320mm front discs and a 220mm rear disc, with the Brake Control System and ABS. Tires are a Bridgestone Battlax Racing Street RS11 at 120/70ZR17 at the front and 190/55ZR17 at the rear. Rake is 24 degrees, with about 4 inches (102mm) of trail on a 55.3-inch (1,397mm) wheelbase, and ground clearance is about 5.1 inches (130mm).

The R1 is about 80.9 inches (2,055mm) long, 27.2 inches wide and 45.9 inches high. Seat height is 855mm (33.7 inches). The tank holds 17 litres (4.5 gallons). The R1 weighs about 201 kg (443 lbs) wet in European figures and about 203 kg (448 lbs) in the US specs.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a YZF-R1 running the way it was built to.
