YZF-R1 (2007-2008): The Bike That Killed the Five-Valve Head After 22 Years

Bennetts' own review captures exactly how significant this update was: "as well as being the first R1 to gain a ride-by-wire throttle, the 2007 update also marked a radical departure for Yamaha as it was the first top-end sportsbike not to feature the firm's five-valve head since the FZ750 introduced the design in 1985" — 22 years of Yamaha's signature five-valve architecture ended with this generation, replaced by a conventional but genuinely more powerful four-valve design.

Power comes from a 998cc liquid-cooled inline-four, delivering a claimed 180-182 hp at 12,500 rpm and roughly 80-85 lb-ft of torque at 10,000 rpm, run through a 6-speed manual gearbox. The new engine featured two massive 31mm titanium intake valves — the largest in its class at the time — paired with 25mm steel exhaust valves and a higher 12.7:1 compression ratio, delivering what one enthusiast retrospective calls "advanced enough to pioneer fly-by-wire tech, yet raw enough to demand skill from its rider." The genuine world-first here was Yamaha's electronic variable-length intake fuel system (YCC-I) combined with the YCC-T fly-by-wire throttle, working together to deliver crisp response across the entire rev range despite the engine's genuinely peaky, top-endy character.

MotoPlanete's own contemporary road test found a genuinely surprising trait for a bike chasing outright performance: it gained weight rather than losing it, up 4kg versus the outgoing model and settling right back at the same figure as the original 1998 R1 — except with 41 more horsepower and a proper superbike-grade chassis underneath. Six-piston radial-mount front brake calipers were a genuine first on a production motorcycle, working on the smaller-diameter discs this generation adopted, while a rear shock with separate high- and low-speed compression damping delivered genuinely sophisticated tunability. MCN's own review praised the roomy seating position specifically, noting riders over six feet had no trouble getting comfortable — a rare compliment for a bike this focused on outright track performance. 2008 brought a 10th Anniversary special edition with unique paint and graphics but otherwise identical mechanical specification, alongside a Canadian Edition (CE) featuring sparkling white and matte black panels with red accents, an LED taillight, hollow bolts for weight reduction, and lightweight forged footpegs. This generation gave way to Yamaha's genuinely groundbreaking cross-plane-crankshaft R1 for 2009.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2007-2008 YZF-R1 running the way it was built to.
