YZ250F/YZ250FR (2024): "Somehow Managed to Get Away With It" — A New Chassis Built Around a Proven Engine
Cycle News' own first-ride review captures the genuine tension Yamaha navigated with this generation: "Yamaha could've just left it alone, and we'd all be happy, so we were curious going into this first ride review if they should've just stuck with the 'if it ain't broke' adage... the 2024 YZ250F isn't totally new. Its much-loved motor returns virtually unchanged. Frankly, it didn't need anything. The frame and chassis, however, are a whole different story." Dirt Bike Magazine's own testing found the gamble paid off: "last year the YZ250F won our 250F shootout, and so far there's nothing about the new version that makes us rethink that."
Power comes from the proven 250cc liquid-cooled DOHC 4-valve single, fuel-injected through a 44mm throttle body fed by a high-pressure electric pump and 12-hole Denso injector, retaining the high-spec piston, aggressive cam profiles, and forward-positioned straight downdraft intake with symmetrical ports that's defined this engine's genuinely broad, useable powerband and class-leading low-end and mid-range torque. PulpMX's own on-track testing confirms the real engine-side changes for 2024 were durability and simplicity-focused rather than performance-chasing: "an increased volume air cleaner, new cam chain, updated ECU system... mostly for durability and simplicity with the wiring harness," alongside a more efficient intake path and revised ECU mapping that Motocross Action Magazine confirms delivers "even more mid- to high-end power" than the outgoing bike.
The genuine headline change is the chassis: Cycle News' own review confirms "it now has the same slim frame that its bigger YZ450F brother got last year," a completely redesigned aluminum bilateral beam frame with new bodywork, a rounded seat, a more streamlined airbox, and a consolidated battery tray and subframe — PulpMX's own track testing found real handling gains from this work: "increased rigidity on the downtube, swingarm pivot and foot peg crossmembers," delivering a lighter feel tipping into corners and better rut tracking, balanced against a slightly less planted feel on the edge of the tire. The KYB coil-spring fork retains its speed-sensitive damping system but gains a genuinely useful hand-adjustable knob for tool-free compression tuning, paired with a revised linkage-type rear shock. New electronic features for this generation include a genuine three-level Traction Control System (HIGH/LOW/OFF) reading wheel slip, and an updated Launch Control System with an adjustable rpm limiter tunable in 500-rpm increments between 6,000 and 14,000 rpm — both controlled through Yamaha's redesigned, smartphone-based Power Tuner App, alongside a new "Simple Tuning" slide-bar interface, a built-in lap timer, and detailed engine and suspension tuning guides. A retro-styled 50th Anniversary Edition launched alongside the standard Team Yamaha Blue colorway, commanding a $200 premium at $9,099 versus the standard bike's $8,899.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2024 YZ250F running the way it was built to.
