YZ125 (2022-2025): "A Completely New Motor on a Tried-and-True Frame" — Yamaha's First Real Engine Overhaul Since 2006

Keefer Inc's own testing confirms exactly what makes this exact generation genuinely significant: "the YZ initially got its major overhaul in 2005 with the aluminum frame and in 2006 with KYB SSS suspension upgrade. Between 2006 and 2021 there were minor changes here and there in attempts to keep the bike progressing... in 2022 the motor got a complete redo to provide a more mid and top end" character than the previous engine's bottom-end-focused delivery. That same review confirms the fundamental architecture stayed unchanged through 2024: "the motor on the YZ125 was all new in 2022 and remains the same for 2024."

Power comes from a liquid-cooled 125cc two-stroke single with Yamaha's patented Power Valve System (YPVS), fed by a Keihin PWK 38S carburetor with a power jet circuit, throttle position sensor, and 3D-map-controlled CDI for precise ignition timing, run through a close-ratio six-speed gearbox. Dirt Rider's own detailed account confirms the genuine scope of the 2022-vintage internal work: new cylinder, cylinder head, and crankcases, along with new internal components including the connecting rod, piston, and piston pin.

Cycle World's own 2025 coverage confirms the platform's genuinely incremental, ongoing refinement: toolless fork compression damping adjust knobs, updated radiators, and fresh graphics for that model year, with pricing at $7,099 standard or $7,299 for the black Monster Energy Edition. A 50th Anniversary Edition arrived in 2024 with white bodywork, purple/pink graphics, a purple seat, and black wheels, sharing the identical mechanical package as the standard bLU cRU colorway.

The closely related YZ125X off-road variant shares this same engine, close-ratio six-speed gearbox, and KYB Speed Sensitive System suspension, differing mainly in an 18-inch rear wheel with Dunlop Geomax MX33 tires versus the motocrosser's 19-inch wheel and Bridgestone tires, plus a fuel petcock with a reserve feature and no spark arrestor requirement given its GNCC and enduro racing focus.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2022-2025 YZ125 running the way it was built to.
