Ténéré 700/XTZ690Z (2019-2024): The Middleweight ADV That "Came Out Swinging" Under $10,000
TopSpeed's own review captures exactly what made this bike a genuine market disruptor at launch: "although it would be fair to say that BMW and KTM beat Yamaha to the punch by several years, neither of them priced their bikes like middleweights... the Ténéré came out swinging, with a price of under $10,000, Yamaha couldn't keep up with demand." Overland Expo's own review confirms Yamaha got the fundamentals right from the start: "Yamaha got the Ténéré 700's ADV ingredients pretty much correct from the start, way back in 2019... has stayed pretty much the same since," debuting in Europe and Asia first before reaching North America in 2020.
Power comes from the proven 689cc CP2, a liquid-cooled DOHC parallel-twin with a 270-degree crank, an 80.0mm x 68.6mm bore and stroke, and an 11.5:1 compression ratio — the same fundamental engine underpinning Yamaha's MT-07, delivering a claimed 65-73 hp and roughly 50 lb-ft of torque through a 6-speed gearbox with chain final drive. TopSpeed's own review notes the engine's genuine off-road pedigree: "developed from the high-tech MT-07 engine, the parallel-twin engine in the Ténéré 700 has proven off-road capabilities in a chassis, ready-made for cross-country" riding. MotoFomo's own buyer's guide confirms this fundamental engine layout stayed unchanged throughout the entire 2019-2024 span, with the meaningful year-to-year differences coming from equipment and electronics rather than the powertrain itself.
MCN's own review is candid about the deliberate simplicity that defines this platform relative to pricier rivals: "there's no traction control, rider modes or clever off-road ABS to be found — but many would argue the Ténéré is better for it." Overland Expo's own testing of the 2024 model confirms a genuinely useful late-cycle refinement: full ABS deactivation became available for the first time that year (previous models only offered rear-ABS-off or fully-on), letting experienced off-road riders control the front brake completely rather than being locked into Yamaha's earlier two-option system. MotoFomo's own model breakdown confirms the standard bike ran a 16-litre tank, 875mm seat height, and 210mm/200mm suspension travel, with a basic vertical LCD display and simple ABS carrying through most of this range before a 5-inch TFT display and three-position switchable ABS finally arrived for 2023-2024. The range expanded considerably within this span: the Ténéré 700 Rally launched for 2023 with a Yamaha rally-racing colorway, a 23-litre fuel tank, a two-piece rally seat, a lightweight Akrapovič silencer, and an adjustable Öhlins steering damper; the Explore variant added revised 190mm-travel KYB forks, a lower seat height, and increased wind protection with available soft and hard luggage; and the range-topping Extreme, launched for 2024, brought fully adjustable long-travel KYB suspension, a high rally seat, a radiator guard, titanium off-road footpegs, gold-anodized wheels, and a high enduro front mudguard — genuinely serious hardware aimed specifically at riders with motocross or enduro experience. This entire 2019-2024 span represents the platform's original, cable-throttle generation before Yamaha's substantial 2025 redesign introduced ride-by-wire, power modes, and traction control.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2019-2024 Ténéré 700 (XTZ690Z) running the way it was built to.
