XSR900 (2022-2024): "The Rebirth of a Legend" — A Genuine Ground-Up Reinvention Built From the MT-09's New CP3

Yamaha's own product materials frame this generation directly as a real reinvention rather than a facelift: "with timeless design inspired by Yamaha's legendary racing heritage and the sheer power of its renowned CP3 powerplant, the XSR900 is the rebirth of a legend." WebBikeWorld's own detailed history confirms exactly what makes this generation genuinely different from the outgoing model: "while the MT-09 got a massive overhaul for the 2021 model year, those changes only made it to the XSR900 for the 2022 model year." MotoFomo's own detailed buyer's guide agrees this represents a genuine turning point for the model's own identity: "the first-gen Yamaha XSR900 was, at its core, a Yamaha FZ-09/MT-09 but re-skinned" — implying, correctly, that this 2022-onward generation is a considerably more thoroughly reworked machine than a simple retro-styled MT-09.

Power comes from the CP3, an 890cc liquid-cooled inline-three, DOHC with a longer stroke and new internals versus the outgoing engine, delivering a claimed 117 hp through a 6-speed transmission with a genuine assist-and-slipper clutch and standard quickshifter. WebBikeWorld's own technical breakdown confirms the specific engineering behind this new engine's real-world benefits: "Yamaha also claims that this engine can deliver 11 percent more fuel efficiency than the one it replaced... the forged connecting rods are made using the fracture-split method—where the big-end ring of the connecting rod is purposefully fractured and then reassembled—to ensure an unparalleled degree of manufacturing accuracy," while "the CP3 engine mounts its three cylinder bores forward, towards the exhaust side. This offset reduces the piston to cylinder wall friction, creating more power and improved fuel economy while the direct-plated ceramic-composite cylinder bores provide excellent heat dissipation and reduced friction."

MCN's own review confirms the genuine character of that output in real-world riding: "the 890cc CP3 churns out a relatively modest 117bhp but still delivers a stunning top-end punch as well as a usable, rich seam of midrange torque. Flexible, proportional, engaging — it's an almost-perfect blend of arm-straightening drive and easy manners, now supported by a 6-axis IMU and lean-sensitive rider aids. There are three riding modes and four power modes to choose from." Yamaha's own feature copy confirms a genuine electronic throttle refinement carried over from the flagship sportbike: "featuring the advanced Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T), the XSR900 takes the technology one step further with the addition of a YZF-R1-type Accelerator Position Sensor Grip (APSG). This is a full ride-by-wire system with a sensor in the twist grip to replicate varying degrees of resistance for a traditional throttle feel."

The chassis uses a Deltabox-style aluminum twin-spar frame, with Total Motorcycle's own coverage confirming "a lightweight Deltabox-style chassis with Brembo radial master cylinder, lightweight Spinforged wheels and fully adjustable suspension" — genuinely premium componentry for a bike positioned deliberately between the standard MT-09 and its higher-spec SP sibling. Ultimate Motorcycling's own coverage of the genuine mid-cycle addition to this range confirms the 2024 XSR900 GP variant: "inspired by Wayne Rainey's three World Championships in the 500cc GP class as the 1990s dawned, the retro-modern Yamaha XSR900 dons a new identity—café racer, with a nod to vintage Grand Prix motorcycle racing... carried-over features include the 890cc CP3 motor, an aluminum twin-spar frame, a quickshifter for the six-speed transmission, and a clutch with assist and slipper functions," with new bodywork adding a genuine half-fairing, clip-on handlebars, and a reinforced subframe supporting the more forward-weighted riding position. Motorcycle.com's own coverage confirms the GP's structural refinement went further still: "in a first for the CP3 models, Yamaha also introduced an aluminum steering stem shaft to adjust rigidity and improve stability during direction changes or deceleration." Standard electronics across the whole 2022-2024 range include TCS traction control, SCS slide control, LIF lift control, cornering ABS, and the up-and-down quickshifter, all managed through the shared six-axis IMU platform.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2022-2024 XSR900 running the way it was built to.
