XSR700 (2016-2021): The MT-07's Engine, Dressed for Yamaha's "Faster Sons"

Bennetts' own retrospective traces a clear lineage: in 2014, Yamaha's MT-07 became a genuine phenomenon — lightweight, learner-friendly, and rewarding enough to become the second best-selling bike in Europe by 2015. The following year, Yamaha took that formula and dressed it in "retro-modern" styling as part of its Faster Sons customization philosophy, creating the XSR700 as a genuine tribute to the 1976 XS650 while keeping every mechanical strength of the MT-07 underneath.

Power comes from the 689cc liquid-cooled CP2 parallel-twin, DOHC with 8 valves and a 270-degree crossplane crankshaft — the uneven firing interval gives the engine a distinctive, V-twin-like pulse rather than a conventional parallel-twin buzz. Output sits at a claimed 74 hp at 9,000 rpm and roughly 50 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm, run through a 6-speed gearbox with chain final drive. The CP2 has built a genuine reputation for durability across its long service life in the MT-07, Ténéré 700, and R7 — known for racking up well over 100,000 miles with minimal major issues when properly maintained.

The main change versus the donor MT-07 is structural: the XSR700's diamond-type steel frame uses the engine as a stressed member with no down or bottom tubes, a design choice that trimmed weight but left the bike about 4kg heavier than the MT-07 overall due to added styling components — still roughly 40kg lighter than rivals like the Triumph Bonneville. Bennetts' launch review found the linear, smooth torque delivery genuinely impressive in the midrange despite the modest peak numbers, and a claimed range over 185 miles from the 14-litre tank in ideal conditions. Style cues include an LED-rimmed round headlight, exposed aluminum tank covers, and a flat bench seat evoking the XS650, while retaining the MT-07's throttle-by-wire, traction control, and dual-channel ABS. One known weak spot across the CP2 family: hollow swingarms prone to internal corrosion, worth checking closely on used examples. The 2021 model brought Euro 5 compliance as the main year-over-year change across this generation.
