FX SHO/FX Cruiser SHO (2008-2013): Yamaha's First Supercharged WaveRunners

Boats.com's own launch review called Yamaha's new engine genuinely mysterious at first — no published horsepower figures, a brand-new hull material called NanoXcel, and a claimed top speed exceeding 65 mph solo. JetDrift's own retrospective confirms exactly what that mystery engine was: "the Yamaha FX SHO and its Cruiser brother were the first supercharged WaveRunners ever built," borrowing the FX platform's hull design while introducing a genuinely new powerplant that redefined performance across Yamaha's entire luxury/touring WaveRunner lineup.

Power comes from a purpose-built 1,812cc four-stroke DOHC inline-four, supercharged and intercooled — Boats.com's own review noted this was "the largest-displacement mill ever dropped into a watercraft hull" at launch, genuinely narrower and shorter than the motorcycle-derived 1.0-litre M1 engine used in Yamaha's other watercraft, despite the substantial displacement increase. JetDrift's own spec sheet confirms a claimed 210 hp at 7,500 rpm — significantly more than the naturally-aspirated variant of the same base engine, which made "only" 180 hp. T.C.I. ignition and LFR6A spark plugs round out the ignition system, with propulsion delivered through a 155mm axial-flow, single-stage jet pump using a stainless-steel impeller and housing, a manual reverse system with neutral, and a 5-position manual Quick-Shift Trim System (QSTS).

The FX SHO Cruiser variant distinguished itself with genuine touring-focused refinements: a fuel-flow meter, a scooped-out touring seat, and handlebars set four inches higher than the standard FX SHO — real ergonomic differences for riders prioritizing comfort on longer outings. JetDrift's own detailed breakdown of the 2012-2013 refresh notes a substantially reworked deck design carried across every FX WaveRunner from that point forward: an extended swim platform lengthened by 4.5 inches, a seating area expanded by 3 inches to accommodate a redesigned "theater-style" two-piece Cruiser saddle with high bolsters for genuinely comfortable three-adult seating, and total storage capacity growing from 23.7 to 33.2 gallons across five separate storage units. The Cruiser's enlarged, more supportive seat contrasted directly with the standard FX SHO's flatter, less traction-friendly saddle. Both models featured drive-by-wire throttle enabling Yamaha's push-button No Wake Mode (holding speed at 5 mph) and Yamaha Cruise Assist, an rpm-based speed control adjustable in 350-rpm increments — genuinely useful when towing a wakeboarder or tuber, letting the driver focus on the water ahead rather than constantly watching the speedometer. Dry weight on the '12-'13 Cruiser SHO came in around 853 lbs, with an 18.5-gallon fuel tank. This SHO generation ran through 2013 before Yamaha's more powerful FX SVHO line took over starting in 2014.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Yamaha WaveRunner FX SHO/FX Cruiser SHO running the way it was built to.
