Viking (2016-2018): Yamaha's Rhino Successor Adds a Genuine Third Seat

UTV Guide's own field-test review, conducted at Wyoming's sprawling 27,000-acre Red Reflet Ranch, captured what makes the Viking's cabin genuinely different from rivals: an exclusive pass-through bucket seating layout with a unique off-set center position, giving three occupants real shoulder room rather than the cramped middle seat typical of the class. Introduced as the successor to the recalled Rhino platform, the Viking became Yamaha's flagship utility side-by-side, spawning Base, EPS, Hunter, and Ranch Edition trims across this generation, plus the six-passenger Viking VI variant.

Power comes from a 686cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine, SOHC with 4 valves, a 102mm bore and 84mm stroke, and a 10.0:1 compression ratio, fed by fuel injection through a large-capacity intake system Yamaha specifically designed for easy in-cabin access and serviceability. UTV Guide's testers found the broad, usable powerband genuinely strong for climbing — the review's Wyoming test route gained over 3,000 feet of elevation across graded roads and tight, tree-lined trails without the engine feeling strained. Power runs through Yamaha's Ultramatic V-belt transmission with dual-range (Hi/Lo) drive, reverse, and all-wheel engine braking — a system Yamaha markets as the most advanced drive setup available in the class, delivering genuine engine braking on descents most CVT-based rivals can't match.

EPS trims add Electric Power Steering, which UTV Guide's own testing found struck a genuinely good balance — light enough for easy maneuvering, but still delivering honest feedback from the terrain rather than numbing it out entirely. The Hunter and Ranch Edition trims layer on task-specific equipment: the Ranch Edition specifically adds painted bodywork, cast aluminum wheels, a hard sun top, rearview mirror, overfenders, and underseat storage, while the engine's under-cargo-bed location and center-hood access to the battery keep routine maintenance genuinely straightforward. A digital instrument panel with multifunction LCD display shows speedometer, odometer, dual trip meters, hour meter, and 4WD/transmission status across every trim in this generation. Three-point seat belts and headrests for all occupants come standard, reflecting Yamaha's post-Rhino emphasis on rollover safety and stability.
