Cycle News's own retrospective doesn't understate the R9's arrival: "easily the most talked-about streetbike of 2025." As a genuine replacement for the legendary R6 — now sold only as a track-only Race model — the YZF-R9 had enormous shoes to fill, and it answered emphatically on track by winning both the MotoAmerica Supersport and WorldSSP Championships in its debut season. It joins MV Agusta's F3 800 and Triumph's Street Triple 765 RS as one of only three three-cylinder machines in the modern supersport class, standing apart from Honda, Suzuki, and Kawasaki's continued four-cylinder approach.

Power comes from the same 890cc CP3 triple that's powered the MT-09 to widespread acclaim, delivering genuinely accessible, torquey street performance rather than the peaky powerband of a traditional 600cc supersport four. Ultimate Motorcycling's launch coverage detailed the chassis built specifically around that engine: an all-new gravity-cast aluminum Deltabox frame, which Yamaha calls the lightest aluminum frame the company has ever offered on a supersport model, paired with the MT-09's swingarm for a genuinely balanced 50/50 weight distribution. Geometry runs a 55.9-inch wheelbase — notably longer than the outgoing R6 for improved stability — with a steep 22.35-degree rake for sharp turn-in.

Suspension consists of a fully adjustable 43mm inverted KYB fork with 4.7 inches of travel and a linkage-type rear shock with 4.6 inches of travel and a remote spring-preload adjuster, backed by Brembo Stylema monoblock front calipers, a Brembo radial master cylinder, and dual 320mm front discs for genuine supersport-level stopping power. MCN's review found the electronics package — built around a six-axis IMU derived from the flagship YZF-R1 — genuinely comprehensive: nine-level traction control, three-level wheelie and slide control, lean-angle-sensitive ABS and brake control, four power modes across five ECU settings (Sport, Street, Rain, and two Custom), a bidirectional quickshifter, launch control, and Yamaha's Variable Speed Limiter. Rear ABS can be switched off entirely for track use. 2025 colors included Team Yamaha Blue, Matte Raven Black, and Intensity White/Redline, with pricing starting at $12,499.
