NMAX 155 (2015-2019): The First ASEAN Scooter With Both VVA and ABS

The New Autocar's own Indonesian launch coverage highlights two genuine industry firsts bundled into one machine: "Yamaha NMAX is the latest Yamaha skutik that comes with carrying the VVA technology (Variable Valve Actuation) which was first applied to the motor in the world, and the first motor scooters on the market in the ASEAN market equipped with the ABS system." Officially launched in February 2015 at the Sentul International Circuit in West Java, Indonesia, the NMAX quickly became Yamaha's flagship entry into the premium commuter scooter segment across Southeast Asia and beyond.

Power comes from a 155.1cc liquid-cooled four-stroke SOHC single-cylinder engine, 4 valves, with a 58.0mm x 58.7mm bore and stroke and a 10.5:1 compression ratio, delivering a claimed 12-15 hp at 8,000 rpm and roughly 11.2-14 Nm of torque at 6,000-6,500 rpm depending on model year, run through Yamaha's proven belt-drive CVT. Yamaha's Variable Valve Actuation technology adjusts valve timing based on engine speed, delivering genuinely stronger low-end torque for city acceleration while still allowing higher-rpm breathing for sustained cruising — a genuine mechanical sophistication rarely seen in this displacement class at the time of launch.

The chassis uses a backbone frame, with a telescopic fork up front and a Unit Swing monoshock rear suspension setup, riding on 13-inch wheels (110/70-13 front, 130/70-13 rear) with single 230mm discs at both ends — a rear disc brake being a genuinely notable upgrade over most rivals in the segment, which typically ran drum brakes at the back. December 2017 brought a minor update marketed as the 2018 model year, refining the platform without a full redesign; Wikipedia's own model history and Indonesian market comparisons confirm the 2018-2019 range carried the same 155cc engine architecture forward with detail refinements. Standard equipment across this generation included a rear disc brake, 4-valve head, and a genuinely sophisticated digital speedometer with a Multi Information Display showing real-time and average fuel consumption alongside an oil-change trip meter — features that helped position the NMAX as a premium option well above typical budget scooters in its class. Seat height sits at 765mm (30.1 in), with a 6.6-litre fuel tank and a 1,350mm wheelbase.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2015-2019 NMAX 155 running the way it was built to.
