MT-09 SP (2024-2025): The Track-Ready Trim That's "Difficult to Ignore"

Ultimate Motorcycling's own verdict on the 2024 SP is blunt: for just $1,700 more than the standard MT-09's $10,599 MSRP, the SP's upgraded suspension, brakes, and electronics create "an incredibly potent machine" — "a difficult fact to ignore from any perspective or skill level." Hot on the heels of the standard MT-09's ground-up 2024 redesign, Yamaha built the SP specifically for riders who wanted the same reworked chassis and ergonomics wrapped around genuinely track-capable hardware.

The 890cc liquid-cooled CP3 inline-triple carries the same output as the standard model — a claimed 119 hp at 10,000 rpm and roughly 69 lb-ft of torque at 7,000 rpm — but Cycle World's buyer's guide details exactly where the SP earns its premium: a fully adjustable 41mm KYB inverted fork with DLC-coated tubes for reduced friction, and a similarly adjustable Öhlins rear shock with remote reservoir and remote preload adjuster, replacing the standard bike's more basic suspension. Rider Magazine's testing found the SP's fork alone — made by KYB but a considerably higher-spec unit with full high- and low-speed compression damping adjustment — transformed the bike's composure on demanding roads.

Braking gets a genuine upgrade too: Brembo Stylema monoblock radial four-piston front calipers replace the standard model's Advics units, both now sharing a Brembo radial front master cylinder for more precise lever feel. The SP adds four exclusive Track ride modes on top of the standard bike's Sport, Street, and Rain settings, plus the ability to switch off rear ABS entirely for supermoto-style corner entries — genuinely track-focused electronics absent from the base model. A Smart Key System with keyless ignition, steering lock, and fuel cap release, along with a larger 5-inch TFT display featuring a dedicated Track theme, round out the SP-specific equipment. Ultimate Motorcycling's track and road testing at Deals Gap's Tail of the Dragon found the combination of chassis, brakes, and electronics genuinely transformed the MT-09 platform's capability ceiling without sacrificing everyday comfort. Wet weight sits close to the standard model, with 2024-2025 pricing starting around $12,299-$12,499.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2024-2025 MT-09 SP running the way it was built to.
