One French review put it well: with the Tracer 9, Yamaha stormed the bastion of over-equipped tourers without ever quite becoming one — it's genuinely a mix of roadster, trail, and sport-GT rolled together, sharing its 890cc CP3 triple and much of its playful character with the naked MT-09 rather than a traditional heavyweight tourer. The platform got a comprehensive overhaul in 2021, and both 2024 and 2025 continued refining that formula rather than starting over.

The 890cc liquid-cooled inline-triple, DOHC with 4 valves per cylinder and Yamaha's signature crossplane crankshaft, delivers a claimed 117 hp at 10,000 rpm and roughly 68.6 lb-ft of torque at 7,000 rpm, run through a 6-speed gearbox with a multiplate assist-and-slipper clutch. The 2025 model year brought Euro5+ compliance without sacrificing output. Standard on the range-topping GT+ and optional on base and GT trims (in some markets) is Yamaha's Y-AMT automatic transmission, first introduced on the MT-09 — using actuators to handle clutch and shifting either automatically or manually via a see-saw switch, and compatible with Adaptive Cruise Control for gear changes without disengaging cruise.

Chassis hardware includes an aluminum Deltabox frame with electronically adjustable KYB suspension — a 41mm inverted fork and single rear shock, both offering remote preload adjustability — paired with dual 298mm front discs and a 267mm rear disc, all backed by ABS. The GT+ adds front and rear radar sensors supporting Adaptive Cruise Control, Unified Brake System with Vehicle Hold Control, Forward Collision Warning, and Blind Spot Detection. 2025 brought the world's first adaptive Matrix LED headlight, using an integrated camera to automatically adjust beam brightness and spread based on traffic, ambient light, and weather, plus a longer, lighter rear subframe for improved pillion accommodation and a flatter, more padded rider seat.
