Tracer 9 (2021-2023): The First-Gen 890 That Made the Tracer a Genuine MT-09 Sibling
2021 marked a genuine reinvention of Yamaha's sport-tourer, not a badge update — the Tracer 9 replaced the Tracer 900 with the updated 890cc engine and a chassis pulled almost directly from the MT-09. Motorcycle News's launch review highlighted a Deltabox frame with 50% more lateral rigidity than before, lighter 10-spoke SpinForged wheels for reduced gyroscopic effect, and an engine rotated nearly 5 degrees more upright in the frame — changes that combined for handling reviewers called "precise, light, so stable and fantastically reassuring" through corners.
The 890cc liquid-cooled crossplane-crankshaft triple delivers a claimed 119 hp and roughly 93 Nm (68.6 lb-ft) of torque, run through a 6-speed gearbox with revised, longer first and second gears for smoother low-speed rideability. A new, longer 64mm aluminum swingarm kept the 1,500mm wheelbase intact while raising potential payload capacity to 193kg, improving centered rideability for two-up and loaded touring. New KYB forks gave the front end a lower, more planted feel, paired with Bridgestone Battlax tires that reviewers praised for genuine confidence-inspiring grip.
The GT trim added Kayaba semi-active suspension linked to a new IMU for wider damping range, plus a floating side-case carrier system — hardware that alone cost over £1,100 as an accessory on the outgoing Tracer 900. A 7-inch TFT dashboard, heated grips with 10 adjustable settings, and Yamaha's up-and-down Quick Shift System rounded out the touring-focused equipment. Late in this generation's run, the range-topping Tracer 9 GT+ arrived (revealed late 2022, hitting dealers for 2023) as Yamaha's new sport-touring flagship, adding radar-linked Adaptive Cruise Control and a Unified Brake System — effectively taking over the role long held by the discontinued FJR1300. Seat height sits around 810mm (31.9 in), with claimed wet weight around 213kg (470 lbs).
