MT-09 (2024-2025): "Ten Years of Hooliganism" Gets Refined, Not Neutered

Ultimate Motorcycling's own retrospective frames the 2024 redesign perfectly: a decade earlier, the original MT-09 "stole our hearts with its snotty punk-rock attitude and penchant for wheelies," racking up 200,000 global sales along the way. For 2024, Yamaha's engineers sharpened nearly everything about the bike — styling, ergonomics, chassis flex, suspension — while, in the same reviewer's words, keeping the fundamental character "quite the opposite" of cutthroat.

The 890cc liquid-cooled CP3 inline-triple carries over its proven architecture — a 78mm x 62.1mm bore and stroke with an 11.5:1 compression ratio, delivering a claimed 119 hp at 10,000 rpm and roughly 69 lb-ft of torque at 7,000 rpm — but Motorcycle.com's first-look coverage detailed genuine ergonomic reinvention around it: a new two-piece seat replacing the old single-piece saddle, adjustable handlebar and footpeg positions (footpegs moved back 1.2 inches and up 0.4 inches for a sportier stance), and a reshaped fuel tank. A new third-generation Quick Shift System enables clutchless up- and downshifts under both acceleration and deceleration, while a two-duct intake design with Acoustic Amplifier Grilles pipes more of the CP3's distinctive induction snarl directly to the rider.

Electronics took a genuine step forward too: Yamaha Ride Control lets riders select from three preset modes (Sport, Street, Rain) or build two fully custom setups adjusting power delivery and intervention levels, managed through a new 5-inch full-color TFT display with smartphone connectivity. Cruise control became standard, and redesigned handlebar switches added intuitive turn-signal functions with self-canceling behavior. Suspension geometry was reworked with higher spring rates and revised damping to suit new-fitment Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S23 tires, while Rider Magazine's testing found the 2024 model got a Brembo radial front master cylinder shared with the range-topping SP trim, delivering more precise lever feel across the board. 2025 carried this generation forward with no significant changes, and mid-2024 brought Yamaha's electromechanical Y-AMT automated-manual transmission into production on the MT-09 for the first time. Wet weight sits around 425 lbs, with a 32.5-inch seat height and 3.4-gallon tank, and 2025 pricing starting at $10,799.
