The 2017 update, unveiled at INTERMOT that October, addressed both complaints head-on — Yamaha gave the second-generation bike a fully adjustable 41mm inverted fork with separate compression and rebound damping (compression in the left leg, rebound in the right), revised rear shock settings, and standard traction control alongside a distinctive new "fox-eye" four-globe LED headlight that gave the bike a genuinely more aggressive face.

The 847cc liquid-cooled inline-triple carried over its proven CP3 architecture unchanged, with a crossplane crankshaft and 120-degree firing order delivering the MT-09's signature growl. Output held at a claimed 115 hp at 10,000 rpm and roughly 65 lb-ft (87.5 Nm) of torque at 8,500 rpm, run through a 6-speed gearbox with an assist-and-slipper clutch that Yamaha's own engineering reduced lever effort by 20% while curbing rear-wheel hop on aggressive downshifts. Fracture-split connecting rods and offset cylinders — genuine engineering details carried from the first generation — kept internal friction low and heat dissipation efficient.

New ABS-equipped braking for 2017 paired radial-mount four-piston front calipers with dual 298mm discs and a single-piston rear caliper on a 245mm disc, delivering confident stopping power to match the reworked suspension. A one-piece dual seat, larger air scoop, single-sided-look rear fender arm, and a Quick Shift System for clutchless upshifts rounded out the equipment upgrades, while Yamaha's D-Mode system offered selectable throttle maps for balancing daily-riding smoothness against outright aggression. The diamond-type aluminum frame and 56.7-inch wheelbase, unchanged from the original 2014 design, kept the MT-09's genuinely light, flickable handling intact — a 25-degree rake and 4.1 inches of trail made tight corners feel effortless despite the bike's substantial power.
