Yamaha MT-09 / FZ-09 (2017-2020): The Second-Generation 847cc Triple with Rider Aids

The MT-09 is Yamaha’s crossplane inline-three hyper-naked, a “roadster motard” with plenty of low-rpm and mid-range grunt to pull cleanly out of corners. The 2017 update gave the bike a look refresh, with a twin headlight design with four LED globes, and the fully adjustable front fork, ABS, three-level traction control, an assist and slipper clutch and a quick shifter (the quick shifter in some markets), plus new ten-spoke wheels. Traction control arrived on the North American model that year. It’s built on a lightweight aluminum frame with a double-sided rear swingarm, and the rear fender has a single forged aluminum arm. It weighs about 425 lbs wet, which is a lot less than the FZ8’s four-cylinder, and it stays light and quick.

The engine is an 847cc liquid-cooled DOHC inline-three with four valves per cylinder (12 in all), a bore and stroke of 78mm x 59.1mm and an 11.5:1 compression ratio. Yamaha claims about 115 hp (86 kW) at 10,000 rpm and about 87.5 Nm (64.5 lb-ft) of torque at 8,500 rpm. The ride-by-wire throttle has selectable riding modes, and power goes through a six-speed gearbox with an assist and slipper clutch and chain final drive.

The front suspension is a fully adjustable 41mm inverted fork, with a rear monoshock adjustable for preload and rebound. Brakes are dual 298mm front discs and a 245mm rear disc with ABS, and tires are a 120/70ZR17 at the front and a 180/55ZR17 at the rear.

The MT-09 is about 2,075mm (81.7 inches) long and 815mm (32.1 inches) wide, with a wheelbase of 1,440mm (56.7 inches) and about 135mm (5.3 inches) of ground clearance. Seat height is 815-820mm (32.3 inches). The tank holds 14 litres (3.7 gallons). The MT-09 weighs about 189-193 kg (414-425 lbs) wet.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep an MT-09 / FZ-09 running the way it was built to.
