Grizzly 700 FI (2007-2013): "The Gold Standard" for Trail-Taming, Bulletproof Reliability
One enthusiast retrospective sums up the Grizzly 700's arrival in the ATV world with genuine conviction: "when Yamaha unleashed the Grizzly 700 onto the ATV scene, it didn't just raise the bar — it bulldozed through it. Between 2006 and 2013, this 686cc beast became the gold standard for riders who demanded equal parts brute strength, trail-taming finesse, and bulletproof reliability." Twelve years after production ceased, that same reviewer, after a week wrestling one through Appalachian mud pits and rocky riverbeds, confirmed the machine "isn't just alive in 2024 — it's thriving."
Power comes from a 686cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine, fed by fuel injection through a 44mm Mikuni throttle body — genuinely reliable cold starts and consistent performance "from sea level to 15,000 feet," per Yamaha's own marketing. Power runs through Yamaha's Ultramatic V-belt automatic transmission, a genuinely advanced system using an automatic centrifugal clutch to maintain constant belt tension for reduced wear, paired with a sprag clutch delivering all-wheel engine braking downhill in both 4WD and reverse — a real safety advantage most rival ATV transmissions of the era didn't offer. Yamaha's own product description calls Ultramatic "the most advanced drive system in ATVs," a claim genuinely backed by the reliability record: ATV.com's own owner survey found 87% of Grizzly 700s still running on their original engines, a testament to how well the fundamental engineering held up.
A three-position On-Command In/Out 4WD system let riders switch between 2WD, limited-slip 4WD, and fully locked-differential 4WD at the push of a button, delivered through a final shaft drive. Suspension consisted of fully independent double-wishbone setups front and rear with five-way preload-adjustable shocks, delivering 180mm of front travel and 241mm at the rear — genuinely long-travel geometry for confident handling over rough terrain, backed by hydraulic disc brakes at all four corners. 2012 brought an Electronic Power Steering (EPS) option alongside the standard non-EPS model, plus a Special Edition trim sharing identical mechanicals with unique color schemes, graphics, and cast aluminum wheels for reduced unsprung weight. Standard equipment included rugged steel cargo racks with wrinkle-paint finish (286 lbs combined capacity), a center-mounted heavy-duty trailer hitch rated to tow over 1,300 lbs, dual 35-watt halogen headlights, and a wide, contoured seat for genuine all-day comfort. Assembled in Newnan, Georgia, 2013 US pricing started at $8,899, with this fundamental 686cc engine and Ultramatic platform running essentially unchanged throughout the entire 2007-2013 span before Yamaha's problematic Subaru-partnership engine update arrived in 2016 (an update Yamaha later reversed, returning to this proven 686cc unit).
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2007-2013 Grizzly 700 FI running the way it was built to.
