Grizzly 700 (2016-2020): Yamaha’s Big-Bore Utility ATV, with a 2016 Redesign and a 2019 Engine Change
Yamaha calls the Grizzly 700 the top-selling big-bore utility ATV. Originally released in 2007, it was completely redesigned for 2016. The 2016 changes included a new engine, new CVT tuning for larger 26-inch Maxxis tires (13mm more ground clearance), a relocated airbox, new plastics, a seat 60mm longer with thicker foam, suspension with 1.2mm more stroke and a new storage area in front of the seat. Styling has LED headlights with a handlebar-mounted work light, an LED taillight, reshaped fenders, three large storage compartments and larger racks with a combined 308-lb capacity. A new digital gauge shows fuel, speed, odometer, trip meters, clock, 4WD status, gear position and EPS warning. The 2016 line was Base ($8,899), EPS ($9,699), Special Edition ($10,299) and Limited Edition ($10,899), with heated seat and grips on the Limited.
For 2016-2018 the engine is a new 708cc liquid-cooled DOHC single with four valves and fuel injection. It makes a claimed 6 percent more peak power and 9-10 percent more torque than the 686cc SOHC engine it replaced, and the transmission’s high-range ratio is 5 percent lower. For 2019 Yamaha moved to a new liquid-cooled 686cc engine with better response and lower vibration, noise and fuel consumption, a new air intake, redesigned engine mounts and model-specific CVT weights and gear ratios.
Both generations use Yamaha’s Ultramatic CVT, with a gated shifter, Hi/Lo range, reverse and a sprag clutch for all-wheel engine braking. Drive is 2WD or 4WD with a locking differential on Yamaha’s On-Command system, and the independent front and rear suspension keeps the ride comfortable. Electric power steering (EPS) almost eliminates handlebar whip. 2019 added a new all-LCD instrument cluster and a stainless steel exhaust with a screen-type spark arrestor.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Yamaha Grizzly 700 running the way it was built to.
