FJ1100/FJ1200 (1984-1996): The "Superbike Class Milestone" That Weighed a Class Below Its Rivals

CycleChaos' own retrospective doesn't undersell the FJ1100's genuine industry impact at launch: "a Superbike class milestone model. Weighing 500 lbs, with a whopping 125 hp, the FJ provided a power-to-weight that was unequalled" for its era, hitting 137 mph and a claimed 97.89 hp measured at 9,000 rpm. Designed by GK Dynamics and produced for 1984-1985 before evolving into the larger FJ1200, the FJ family deliberately prioritized real-world sport-touring versatility over pure track performance — Wikipedia's own account notes Yamaha placed the alternator behind the cylinders rather than at the crankshaft end specifically to keep the whole machine narrower and more manageable.

Power comes from a 1,188cc air/oil-cooled inline-four (on the FJ1200), DOHC with 16 valves via chain-driven camshafts, fed by four constant-velocity carburetors mounted behind the cylinders on a short intake manifold, delivering a claimed 130 hp at 9,000 rpm and roughly 80 lb-ft of torque at 7,500 rpm — a genuine 5 hp bump over the outgoing FJ1100's 125 hp, along with meaningfully improved low-to-midrange torque. Yamaha built the FJ1200 across three main successive versions within this run — the 1TX, 3CV, and 3XW — each bringing genuine bodywork updates and front/rear suspension refinements rather than wholesale redesigns.

A genuinely important addition arrived from 1991 through 1996: the FJ1200A, fitted with an optional Anti-Lock Braking System — advanced safety technology for a sport-touring bike of this era. Suspension consists of a three-way adjustable telescopic fork up front and a five-way preload, five-way rebound-adjustable monoshock at the rear, delivering genuinely tunable handling for a bike this size. Autoevolution's own model history notes the FJ family competed directly against the BMW K100RS, Suzuki 1100 Katana, and Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10 throughout its production run — genuine heavyweight sport-touring rivals of the mid-to-late-'80s and early '90s. The FJ1200 was discontinued in the United States in 1993, while UK and other international markets continued selling it through 1996, right before Yamaha's FJR1300 arrived in 2001 to carry the sport-touring torch forward. Wet weight on the FJ1200 settled around 586 lbs, with a 24-litre (6.3 US gallon) fuel tank and a 27.5-degree rake.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 1984-1996 FJ1100/FJ1200 running the way it was built to.
