DT175 A/B/C (1974-1976): The Original Twin-Shock Trail Bike, Simplified by Autolube
Classic Motorbikes' own road test frames the DT series' place in history plainly: "back in 1969, Yamaha were the first to put a trail bike into production, and by the mid-70s the idea had caught on in the UK." That same review captures exactly why the DT175 earned such a devoted following: "modern motorcycles don't come much simpler than the DT... the Autolube system, once set up and running correctly, takes care of the engine's needs, leaving the rider little else to do but keep an eye on the oil levels and the tank filled" — a genuine convenience over rivals still requiring pre-mixed two-stroke fuel.
Power comes from a 175cc air-cooled two-stroke single, delivering a genuine 65 mph top speed and a claimed 1.48 lb-ft of torque at 5,500 rpm — modest numbers even by mid-'70s trail-bike standards, but genuinely adequate for the DT's mixed on-road and off-road mission. This 1974-1976 span covers the original A, B, and C model-year designations — a genuinely simple, twin-shock generation that predates the significant 1977-1978 redesign, which brought Yamaha's revolutionary Mono-cross single-shock rear suspension inspired directly by the YZ motocross lineup. Legends Yamaha Enduro's own model-year breakdown confirms the exact progression across this range: the 1974 DT175A, 1975 DT175B, and 1976 DT175C, with 1977 notably absent from US-market production before the DT175E monoshock model arrived for 1978.
Suspension consists of a telescopic front fork and a genuine dual-shock swingarm rear end — the traditional twin-shock layout that defined trail bikes of this era, well before Mono-cross technology arrived. Braking uses a single drum front and single drum rear, with a 2.75-21 front tire and 4.10-18 rear tire mounted to a cradle-style tubular steel frame. The DT175 carried a 2.51-gallon (9.5-litre) fuel tank and weighed a genuinely light 220 lbs (100 kg) dry, contributing to the nimble, forgiving handling that made this generation such a popular first serious dirt bike for riders learning both trail riding and basic mechanical maintenance. This original 1974-1976 A/B/C series shares its fundamental engine architecture and workshop procedures with Yamaha's contemporary DT100 and DT125 models, which is why Yamaha's own factory documentation bundles all three displacement classes into a single combined service and parts manual.
This factory service manual covers the engine overhaul, carburetion service, and complete maintenance procedures needed to keep a 1974-1976 DT175 A/B/C running the way Yamaha built it.
