Bennetts' own buying guide calls this Triumph's genuine answer to BMW's dominant adventure bike, and MCN's own review agrees it's "extremely well put together, with build quality on par, if not better than BMW" — while noting the Explorer undercut the R1200GS on price without the German bike's brand cachet. Motorcyclespecs.co.za's own launch materials confirm this was Triumph's first-ever ride-by-wire throttle, paired with a genuinely new shaft-drive triple built specifically for the adventure-touring class.

Power comes from a 1,215cc liquid-cooled DOHC inline-three, delivering a claimed 135-137 hp at 9,000 rpm and roughly 89 lb-ft (121 Nm) of torque at 8,400 rpm, run through a 6-speed gearbox and a genuine shaft final drive — a first for a Triumph triple. Standard equipment included cruise control, switchable ABS, two-stage traction control, and a 950W generator Triumph called class-leading, letting owners run heated grips, heated seats, and other accessories simultaneously without straining the electrical system.

The chassis uses a tubular steel trellis frame with cast alloy wheels (19-inch front, 17-inch rear) on a single-sided swingarm, braking through twin 305mm front discs with Nissin four-piston calipers and a 282mm rear disc. Autoevolution's own confirmed model-year account notes 2013 and 2014 carried the same specification with no significant changes, and a spoke-wheeled XC variant with off-road styling joined the standard road-oriented model in 2013.
