Thruxton 900: The Bike That Made Ducati and BMW "Imitate" a Retro Café Racer Formula

Big Bike Reviews' own retrospective doesn't undersell the Thruxton's genuine industry influence: "featuring carbureted and fuel-injected engines, a 120-mph top speed, avant-garde chassis components, and classic styling, the motorcycle laid the foundation for modern-day café racers... the fact that industry rivals like Ducati and BMW mimicked its retro café racer recipe" speaks to how genuinely well Triumph nailed the formula. The Thruxton name itself carries real racing heritage — first used on a hand-built Bonneville that competed in mid-1960s British endurance racing — revived when Triumph's reborn Hinckley factory applied it to this modern café racer for 2004.

Power comes from an 865cc air-cooled parallel-twin, DOHC with a 360-degree crank angle, a 90mm x 68mm bore and stroke, delivering a claimed 68-70 hp at 7,200-7,250 rpm and roughly 53 lb-ft of torque at 5,750-6,400 rpm through a 5-speed gearbox with chain final drive, fed by two carburetors throughout this entire 2004-2007 span (fuel injection didn't arrive until 2008). Wikipedia's own account confirms the engine is a genuine upgrade over the contemporary Bonneville's unit of the same model year — new cams and pistons bored out to 90mm, taking displacement to 865cc and power up from the base Bonneville's figures specifically to give the Thruxton a genuinely sportier character.

Styling stayed deliberately faithful to authentic café racer conventions throughout this run: a round headlight with instruments mounted on top, a teardrop-shaped fuel tank, a single seat with a passenger seat cover, rearset footrests, a small fly screen, dual reverse-cone exhaust silencers, and wire-spoke wheels — genuine period-correct detailing rather than a modern reinterpretation. The chassis uses a tubular steel cradle frame with a 41mm adjustable telescopic fork up front and dual adjustable rear shocks, backed by a single 320mm floating front disc with a dual-piston caliper and a 255mm rear disc with a two-piston caliper. Autoevolution's own year-by-year breakdown notes 2007 brought the most visible styling refresh within this span: a revised stripe decal on the tank and passenger seat cover, a black-finished engine with polished and lacquered covers, color-matched fenders, and a new Tornado Red colorway. Dry weight sits around 451 lbs (205kg), with a 16-litre (4.2 US gallon) fuel tank and 2007 US pricing at $7,999.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2004-2007 Thruxton 900 running the way it was built to.
