Sprint ST 955 (1998-2005): The Sport-Tourer with the Daytona's Single-Sided Swingarm
Triumph unveiled the Sprint ST at the end of 1998 as its interpretation of the modern sport-tourer. The rear end, including the single-sided swingarm, was lifted from the Daytona. Triumph used lower-spec suspension and detuned the triple for touring. The single-sided arm is light and rigid, and it lets the pannier system tuck in tight to the rear wheel. Factory panniers and a top box could be added for touring and removed for sport riding.
Power comes from the 955cc liquid-cooled DOHC 12-valve inline-three with fuel injection. The first bikes used softer cam profiles and remapped fuelling to fill the hole in the power delivery at 4,000 rpm that the first T595 Daytona had. They claimed about 108-112 hp, with torque held high and flat around 65 lb-ft. For 2002 Triumph retuned the engine to a claimed 118 hp, with Lotus-assisted revisions including shim-under-bucket valve adjustment, lighter cases, a thinner radiator, lighter injectors and new headers with a balance pipe for midrange torque. A 2002 dyno test measured 107.8 hp and 66 lb-ft at the rear wheel, 6.3 hp more than the same magazine's 1999 bike. The gearbox is a 6-speed with chain final drive.
The chassis is a twin-spar aluminium frame with adjustable suspension. Brakes are dual front discs and a single 255mm rear disc with a two-piston caliper. They are the same as the Daytona 955i's, and ABS wasn't offered in any year. Dry weight is about 207 kg (456 lbs).
Known points to check are seized chain adjusters, seized brakes that warp the discs, and hub-carrier bearings in the single-sided swingarm, which make wheel removal difficult if they aren't maintained. The standard headlights are also weak. The ST's half-faired sibling, the Sprint RS, has a double-sided swingarm and isn't designed for hard luggage. The 955 engine is shared with the Speed Triple 955i, Daytona 955i and Sprint RS, but nothing from the 2005-on Sprint ST 1050 fits.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 1998-2004 Sprint ST 955 running the way it was built to.
