Sprint RS 955 (1998-2005): The Half-Faired, Lighter Sibling of the Sprint ST

The Sprint RS is the half-faired, sportier variant of the Sprint ST sport-tourer. Its chassis is largely the ST's twin-spar aluminium frame, but with the swingarm changed. The RS uses a lighter, stiffer double-sided swingarm in place of the ST's single-sided item. That change and the smaller fairing make it about 8 kg lighter. The RS also has a slightly steeper head angle, flatter bars, a seating position further forward and a single seat with a hump, though a double seat was available.

Power comes from the 955cc liquid-cooled DOHC 12-valve inline-three, the same engine as the Speed Triple 955i and Daytona 955i. Compression went from 11.2:1 to 12:1 for the 955 generation. Claimed output was about 108-110 hp on the early bikes, rising to about 118-120 hp from 2002, when the RS got the revised 955i engine with new Sagem fuel injection. Torque is about 71 lb-ft (96 Nm). The gearbox is a 6-speed with a wet multi-plate clutch and chain final drive.

Brakes are dual front discs with four-piston Nissin calipers and a single 255mm rear disc with a two-piston caliper. ABS wasn't offered on any year. Confirmed figures list a 1,470mm (57.9-inch) wheelbase, shared with the ST, and a weight of about 199-207 kg (439-456 lbs), depending on source.

The RS never sold as well as the ST, and Triumph ended it after 2004 in favour of the new Sprint ST 1050, which arrived in 2005. The final year was unchanged. The 1050 uses a different engine, chassis and electronics, so no 955 Sprint part fits it. The 955 triple's engine parts are shared across the Sprint RS, Sprint ST, Speed Triple 955i and Daytona 955i.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 1999-2004 Sprint RS 955 running the way it was built to.
