Speedmaster (2002-2007): A "Pared-Down Hot-Rod" Take on the Bonneville America

Autoevolution's own model history frames the Speedmaster's genesis directly: "after the success of the Bonneville America, more and more riders wanted something similar but better, so the British maker introduced the 2003 Triumph Speedmaster, a pared-down, hot-rod version with a tougher look." Wikipedia's own account details exactly what distinguished it from the America it was based on: a black-finished engine, shortened gearing, a flat handlebar mounted on risers, a one-piece rider/passenger saddle, and cast alloy wheels with twin front discs — replacing the America's single front disc for genuinely stronger stopping power.

Power comes from an air-cooled DOHC parallel-twin, launched at 790cc with a 270-degree crank and delivering a claimed 53.1 hp at the rear wheel with a 103 mph top speed. In 2005, Triumph increased displacement to 865cc, delivering peak power at 6,750 rpm with a claimed 54 hp and roughly 51 lb-ft (69 Nm) of torque at 4,800 rpm — genuinely more midrange grunt than the smaller-displacement original, though MCN's own review is candid that "a peak power output of just 54bhp isn't going to float too many boats" against rival cruisers. Both engine sizes ran through a 5-speed gearbox with chain final drive throughout this carbureted-era span; fuel injection didn't arrive until 2008.

MCN's own testing found the Speedmaster's chassis genuinely well-sorted despite the modest power: beefy 41mm forks, a twin-shock rear end, and a substantial cradle frame that "carries the weight low down," with most riders admiring the handling despite the bike's genuinely heavy 229kg dry weight. One long-term owner review collected by MCN praised the engine specifically: "the 790cc engine is just as good [as the 865cc], and the 270 degree timing order coupled with TOR slash-cut pipes" gives the Speedmaster genuine character through its exhaust note. Autoevolution's own coverage of the 2007 model year notes the range carried the same fundamental specification forward with new color schemes — Mulberry Red, Phantom Black, Phantom Black with Tornado Red, and Phantom Black with Sunset Red — rather than mechanical changes, since the bigger 2007 update (fuel injection, restyled alloy wheels, slash-cut silencers, and revised passenger footrests) arrived the following year. Seat height sits at a genuinely low 28.3 inches, with a 65.2-inch wheelbase and 20-litre (5.2 US gallon) fuel tank.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2001-2007 Speedmaster running the way it was built to.
