Speed Triple R 1050: The Öhlins-and-Brembo Track-Day Streetfighter
Triumph introduced the R in 2012 as a high-spec version of the Speed Triple launched at the start of 2011. It adds Öhlins suspension, lightweight forged wheels, Brembo radial monobloc brakes, cosmetic changes, a new gearbox and a 2 kg weight saving. The result turned Triumph’s feisty streetfighter into a hugely competent trackday tool. The forged PVM wheels were fitted only to the 2012 bike, so bikes from 2013 reverted to cast wheels, making the first year the highest-spec one.
Power comes from the same 1,050cc inline-three as the standard bike, claiming about 133 bhp. It uses a new-design gearbox, which Triumph said would feature on the next generation of its 1050 triples. The R has dual 320mm front discs with four-piston Brembo radial monobloc calipers, which Triumph said offer a 5 percent improvement in braking, with optional ABS.
The suspension is the R’s signature: 43mm Öhlins NIX30 inverted forks and an Öhlins TTX36 monoshock. Used-bike buyers are told that Öhlins components dislike being left unused, and that throttle bodies are worth balancing at service, which non-approved workshops often miss.
Parts from the first-generation R won’t fit the 2016-onward bike, which has a new 1050cc engine making about 140 hp, ride-by-wire, rider modes, traction control and switchable ABS.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2012-2015 Speed Triple R 1050 running the way it was built to.
