XDiavel S (2016-2017): Ducati’s First Belt-Drive Cruiser, with 156 hp and a Feet-Forward Stance

The XDiavel was Ducati’s cruiser, with a long, low look and a relaxed, feet-forward riding position. The S is the premium version. It adds daytime running lights, DLC-coated forks, upgraded Brembo M50 monoblock front calipers, a special seat, machine-finished aluminium belt covers and a gloss black finish. Ergonomics are tunable with four footpeg positions, five seats and three handlebar bends. At launch it was Ducati’s fastest-accelerating (0-60 mph) motorcycle, thanks to a low profile, long wheelbase and power low in the rev range. It is the first Ducati with final belt drive, chosen for quiet, clean running, low maintenance and a fluid throttle response.

Power comes from the Testastretta DVT 1262, a liquid-cooled 1,262cc 90-degree L-twin with four desmodromically actuated valves per cylinder, dual spark and Desmodromic Variable Timing. It has a 106mm x 71.5mm bore and stroke and a 13:1 compression ratio, fed by Bosch ride-by-wire injection. Output is a claimed 156 hp at 9,500 rpm and 95 lb-ft (129 Nm) of torque at 5,000 rpm. The gearbox is a 6-speed with straight-cut gears, and the final belt drive is 28/80. The water pump moved inside the V between the cylinders, so the cooling pipes are no longer visible on the left.

Electronics are at the top of Ducati’s range. They include a Bosch IMU and cornering ABS, eight-level Ducati Traction Control, three riding modes, cruise control, Ducati Power Launch, hands-free keyless starting, a TFT dashboard and full LED lighting. Tires are Pirelli Diablo Rosso II.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2016-2017 Ducati XDiavel S running the way it was built to.
