Scrambler 900: "Bling Retro Statement on Two Wheels," With Real Off-Road Roots

MCN's own review doesn't dress up the Scrambler's real-world limitations, but captures its genuine appeal anyway: "this is not a sports bike, this is bling retro statement on two wheels. It is a mild 900cc street icon, that is loosely based on the old TR6 motorcycle that had real off road capabilities." Designed by John Mockett — his final motorcycle for Triumph after starting with the company in 1989 — the Scrambler shared its high-mounted twin exhaust system and crossover headers directly with the TR6C Trophy it drew styling inspiration from.

Power comes from an 865cc air-cooled parallel-twin with a 270-degree crankshaft, delivering a claimed 54-56 hp at 7,000 rpm and roughly 51 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm, run through a 5-speed manual gearbox with wet multi-plate clutch and chain final drive. Bennetts' own buying guide confirms these earliest 2006-2007 models ran two 36mm Keihin carburetors — Triumph didn't switch to fuel injection across the range until 2008 — with genuinely similar torque output to later injected models, just delivered slightly lower in the rev range. A tubular steel cradle frame carries a 41mm conventional telescopic fork (120mm travel) up front and twin side-mounted, preload-adjustable shocks with chromed springs (106mm travel) at the rear, with a 310mm front disc on a dual-pot caliper and a 255mm rear disc on a two-pot caliper handling braking.

Bennetts' own year-by-year breakdown notes the only meaningful change between these two model years was cosmetic — 2006 launched in red/white and blue/white colorways, while 2007 switched the engine case finish from silver to matte black and added green/silver and orange/silver options. Styling throughout stayed genuinely faithful to the scrambler-bike template: wire-spoke wheels (19-inch front, 17-inch rear), semi-knobbly Trailwing tires, stacked twin silencers on the right-hand side, a one-piece dual seat, and a round headlight. Bennetts' own reliability notes flag a few genuine points worth checking on used examples from this era: water intrusion into the wiring loom causing coil failures and misfires, corroding oil pressure sensors, and a factory recall addressing wiring between the alternator and main loom shorting out or overheating on a batch of 900s. Dry weight comes in around 205kg (452 lbs), with a claimed top speed around 105-108 mph.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2006-2007 Scrambler 900 running the way it was built to.
