Bonneville 790/865 (2001-2007): The Reborn Original That Started Triumph's Modern Twin-Cylinder Era

Wikipedia's own account is precise about this bike's genuine place in Triumph's comeback story: built in Hinckley, Leicestershire "between 2001 and 2007, when the engine size was increased to 865cc," the modern Bonneville represented Triumph's deliberate return to the classic parallel-twin roadster formula that had defined the brand for decades before the company's 1980s collapse and subsequent rebirth. Every other variant covered in this family — the America, Speedmaster, T100, and Thruxton — traces its fundamental engine and chassis architecture directly back to this base model.

Power comes from a 790cc air-cooled DOHC parallel-twin with a 360-degree crank, an 86mm x 68mm bore and stroke, delivering a claimed 62 hp at 7,400 rpm and roughly 44 lb-ft (60 Nm) of torque at 3,500 rpm through a 5-speed gearbox with chain final drive. For 2004, the engine received a black-finished update, and Wikipedia's own production notes confirm this original 790cc displacement ran until 2007, when Triumph increased engine size to 865cc across the Bonneville range — the same displacement bump that arrived on the America, Speedmaster, and T100 during roughly the same window.

The chassis uses twin Kayaba rear shocks paired with non-adjustable 41mm Kayaba telescopic forks, set at a 29-degree head angle with 117mm of trail — genuinely conservative, stable geometry suited to the Bonneville's role as an accessible, everyday roadster rather than a sport bike. A 19-inch front wheel paired with a 17-inch rear, combined with a relatively long 58.8-inch wheelbase and a genuinely low 30.5-inch seat height, gave the reborn Bonneville what Wikipedia's own description calls "the 'lean' look of the original" — deliberately evoking the classic 1960s Bonnevilles that made the name famous, while running thoroughly modern mechanicals underneath. Dry weight comes in around 451 lbs (205kg), with a 3.75-imperial-gallon (17-litre) fuel tank. This original 790cc-then-865cc-carbureted generation ran through 2007, forming the direct mechanical foundation for the entire family of Bonneville-based variants Triumph built alongside it during this era, before fuel injection arrived across the range starting in 2008.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2001-2007 Bonneville 790/865 running the way it was built to.
