Bonneville America (2001-2007): The Genuine Starting Point for Triumph's Modern Cruiser Lineup
Wikipedia's own production timeline confirms the America ran 790cc (carbureted) from 2002 through 2006, before stepping up to 865cc (still carbureted) for the 2007 model year — the same fundamental engine progression the related Speedmaster and Bonneville T100 followed during this same span, since all three shared Triumph's core parallel-twin architecture built at the Hinckley, Leicestershire factory. It's this shared platform that made the America the genuine template Triumph's engineers worked from when developing the sportier, blacked-out Speedmaster variant that followed.
Power comes from an 865cc (later spec) air-cooled DOHC parallel-twin with a distinctive 270-degree firing angle, delivering a claimed 61 hp at 6,800 rpm and roughly 51 lb-ft (69 Nm) of torque at 4,800 rpm through a 5-speed gearbox with chain final drive. That 270-degree crank arrangement gives the America a genuinely different exhaust note and power delivery character than a conventional 360-degree parallel-twin — closer in feel to a V-twin's uneven firing pulses than the smoother, more even beat typical of straight parallel-twins, a deliberate choice suited to the bike's cruiser mission.
Styling stays genuinely faithful to classic American cruiser cues throughout this run: deeply valanced fenders, a wide, pulled-back handlebar, forward-mounted footpegs, and a low, accessible riding stance built around a substantial 65.2-inch wheelbase — genuinely long and low for stability at cruiser speeds rather than aggressive cornering. A single front disc brake (later upgraded to dual discs on the related Speedmaster variant) provided stopping power, reflecting the America's positioning as the more classically-styled, single-disc base model within Triumph's cruiser range, versus the Speedmaster's more overtly performance-oriented twin-disc setup. Seat height sits at a genuinely low 28.3 inches (720mm), with dry weight around 504 lbs (229kg) — substantial mass carried low in the chassis for genuine stability at a standstill and while cruising. Fuel capacity runs 4.3 imperial gallons (20 litres), supporting the kind of relaxed, long-distance touring the America was genuinely built for. This carbureted-era America ran through 2007 before Triumph introduced fuel injection across the range in 2008, closing out the model's original mechanical specification.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2001-2007 Bonneville America running the way it was built to.
