Suzuki VS1400 Intruder (1987-2004): Suzuki’s Big 1,360cc Air/Oil-Cooled V-Twin Cruiser
When Suzuki introduced the 1400 in 1987 it was something of a revelation. The styling took Japanese customs to a new level of Americanization, and the 1,360cc V-twin was, at least briefly, the biggest anyone had experienced, Suzuki’s direct answer to Harley’s 1340cc Evolution. Magazines praised its slow-turning torque at cruising speeds, and later cruiser tests called it the oldest bike in the basic big-twin class. The 2004 US price was $8,399, with chrome aluminum wheels and a relaxed riding position. Owners like how little maintenance it needs: no coolant, no chain and no valve lifters to adjust.
The engine is a 1,360cc air/oil-cooled 45-degree V-twin with SOHC and six valves, three per cylinder, and a 94mm x 98mm bore and stroke. The front cylinder is air-cooled and the rear is oil-cooled through a system similar to the SACS fitted on Suzuki’s GSX-R750 and 1100. An oil cooler under the steering neck and a large oil sump (about 5.3 quarts) carry that oil flow, and it has an automotive-type spin-on filter. Two 36mm Mikuni carburetors connected by a sync rod feed it, and the 2004 model has a 9.3:1 compression ratio. Power is about 72 hp at 4,800 rpm, with about 115 Nm (85 lb-ft) of torque at 5,000 rpm. Early bikes use a 4-speed gearbox, with a 5-speed on later bikes, and final drive is by shaft.
Tires on the 2004 bike are a 110/90-19 front and a 170/80-15 rear, with an 11.6-inch (295mm) front disc. The rear suspension has oil-damped twin shocks with 5-way adjustable preload.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Suzuki VS1400 Intruder running the way it was built to.
