RM-Z250 L4 (2014): "Still the Bike to Beat" — A Genuine Refinement Year After a Comprehensive 2013 Overhaul
Motorcycle.com's own first-ride review is candid about the genuine scale of this specific model year's change relative to the previous season's overhaul: "Suzuki made several updates to its 2013 RM-Z250 MX machine, adding numerous technical upgrades to the engine, chassis and electrical system to improve the power delivery and enhance handling. With so many changes made last year, and given the typical development cycle of the OEMs, it's no surprise that the 2014 RM-Z250 returned to the MX wars in virtually the same trim. In fact, besides new radiator shrouds and yellow number plates the only performance upgrade is a reprogrammed Electronic Control Module."
Power comes from a 249cc liquid-cooled DOHC single-cylinder engine, a 77.0mm x 53.6mm bore and stroke, and a 13.5:1 compression ratio, fed by fuel injection through a 6-speed transmission with chain final drive. Motorcycle.com's own technical breakdown explains exactly what that reprogrammed ECM does and why it matters: "in a nutshell, the reprogrammed ECM does away with the wasted spark that occurs during the exhaust stroke. Without this spark any residual unburned combustibles will not ignite foregoing any unwanted power stroke when attempting to kickstart the bike. The spark remains firing during normal engine operation only retarding when the ECM detects the motor is being kicked through during the starting process" — a genuinely clever, purely software-based fix specifically targeting easier kick-starting without touching any hardware.
TotalMotorcycle's own factory specification sheet confirms the genuine engineering carried forward from the prior year's substantial update: an aluminum cylinder with Suzuki Composite Electrochemical Material (SCEM) coating for durability and efficient heat transfer, a muffler using conventional bolts rather than rivets in the end cap "to simplify the replacement of the glass wool packing," and a redesigned radiator fin with revised water hose routing for genuinely improved cooling stability under demanding conditions, plus a new bypass hose specifically added to simplify occasional radiator maintenance. Motorcycle.com's own test rider Abbatoye offered genuinely candid real-world feedback on the carried-over engine: "being one of the top rated 250's in 2013, Suzuki decided to continue with the motor package in the RM-Z250 they offered last year. While it's a well performing engine my only complaint is bottom-end power response is a little sluggish... however, after changing to the more aggressive coupler the 250 seemed to liven up." That same review confirms genuine tunability built into the stock fuel-injection setup: "Suzuki RM-Zs come with two EFI couplers that offer a choice between mellow or aggressive fueling," letting riders match power delivery to track conditions or personal skill level without any actual mechanical modification. Suspension consisted of Showa's Separate Function front Fork (SFF), with that same test rider calling it "a great package" and confirming genuine confidence in the setup. This L4 model designation reflects Suzuki's own internal 2014-model-year coding, with the bike sold new at $7,599 in the US market.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2014 RM-Z250 L4 running the way it was built to.
