Suzuki QuadSport LT-Z400 (2009-2018): The Fuel-Injected, R450-Inspired QuadSport

Suzuki redesigned the QuadSport Z400 for 2009 with features from its big brother, the QuadRacer LT-R450, including fuel injection, ECM settings for better traction and the R450’s aggressive styling. The chassis was redesigned to be more accessible and user-friendly, with a slimmer design, a front track widened by 25mm, 46mm-wide footpegs like the R450’s, and a rider position that allows more freedom to shift weight. The 2009 price was $6,199, in white or yellow, and it was a $200 increase over the 2008. The Z400’s racing heritage includes Doug Gust’s 2004 ATVA Pro class championship, the first for a four-stroke production quad. Limited editions were sold in 2009-2012, and the LT-Z400 is a solo-only machine and is not street legal.

Power comes from a 398cc liquid-cooled DOHC single with four valves, a counterbalancer, a 90mm x 62.6mm bore and stroke and an 11.2-11.3:1 compression ratio. A 36mm throttle body with a 12-hole injector feeds it, with a 16-bit ECU that picks injection volume and timing from throttle position and engine rpm. Output is about 38 hp and 40 Nm at 6,500 rpm. The gearbox is a 5-speed manual with a clutch.

Stopping power comes from dual front discs (about 6.9 inches) and a single rear disc (about 8.6 inches). Suspension is adjustable, and the fuel tank holds about 2.5 gallons (9.5-10 litres). Confirmed figures list a 1,830mm length, a 1,165mm width, a 1,245mm wheelbase, a 810mm seat height and a kerb weight of about 193 kg. Before 2009 the QuadSport was carbureted, so the earlier carburetor manuals don’t match the fuel-injected bike.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Suzuki LT-Z400 QuadSport running the way it was built to.
