GSX-R600 K1/K2/K3 (2001-2003): "Any Self-Respecting Suzuki Fanatic's Must-Have Middleweight"
Bennetts' own used-buying guide leaves little room for doubt about this bike's standing: "for those three years between 2001 and 2003 the second-gen Gixer 6 was any self-respecting Suzuki fanatic's must-have middleweight." It's a genuinely all-new machine, not a fuel-injected update of the outgoing carbureted SRAD bike — TotalMotorcycle's own model history calls the 2001 K1 "a totally new machine that mirrors the successful 2000 GSX-R750 design," designed by the same engineering team responsible for that acclaimed 750Y.
Power comes from an all-new 599cc liquid-cooled inline-four, DOHC with 16 valves, sharing its basic design approach with the GSX-R750 but running unique cylinder heads, cylinder block, valves, camshafts, cam chain, crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, clutch assembly, and most transmission gears. Electronic fuel injection with the Suzuki Dual Throttle Valve (SDTV) system replaced carburetors entirely for the first time on this model, delivering a claimed 115 hp and genuinely crisp, precise throttle response that owner reviews on MCN consistently praised as a night-and-day improvement over rivals still running carbs, including that era's Yamaha R6 and Kawasaki ZX-6R. Suzuki's engineers cut a genuine 25 lbs versus the outgoing model, landing at a class-leading 359 lb dry weight.
Bennetts' guide notes spec changes across this three-year run were minimal — fresh colors and graphics were the main year-to-year differences — making any K1-K3 a fundamentally consistent proposition regardless of exact model year. The genuine standout within the run is the 2003 GSX-R600 SE, a limited-edition "Alstare" racing-graphics special (1,500 units, mostly sold in Germany) celebrating Suzuki's World Superbike success, alongside the 2003 model's added integrated choke while remaining fuel injected. Owner reviews collected by MCN consistently highlight the stiff frame and genuine confidence it inspires carrying speed into corners, tempered by common complaints about wrist strain on longer trips and paint that chips easily without regular care. This generation was replaced by the comprehensively redesigned K4/K5 for 2004, which brought inverted forks, radial-mount brakes, and titanium valves.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2001-2003 GSX-R600 K1/K2/K3 running the way it was built to.
