GSX-R600 (2011-2020): The Seventh Generation That Ran a Decade Unchanged
TotalMotorcycle's own history sums up why this generation lasted so long: the "all-new redesigned 2011 Suzuki GSX-R600" arrived with a genuinely reworked engine, lighter chassis, and race-inspired suspension, hitting a level of refinement that Suzuki simply didn't feel compelled to significantly revise for the better part of a decade afterward, unlike most rivals in the class.
Visordown's own launch coverage detailed the extent of the weight-cutting: engineers reviewed and optimized the rigidity balance of "every small piece of the machine," reducing exterior plastics, muffler, frame, forks, swingarm, and brake caliper weight for a genuine 9kg (20 lb) reduction over the outgoing model, alongside a 15mm shorter wheelbase and reduced front/rear overhang. The 599cc liquid-cooled inline-four, DOHC with an oversquare bore-stroke ratio for efficient high-rpm breathing, delivers a claimed 124-126 hp at 13,500 rpm and roughly 49-50 lb-ft of torque at 11,500 rpm, run through a close-ratio 6-speed transmission with a back-torque-limiting slipper clutch for markedly improved rideability under hard braking and downshifts. Suzuki's race-team-derived camshaft profiles use an aggressive valve-lift curve — a first for any production Suzuki — paired with shot-peened connecting rods and chrome-nitride-coated compression rings for genuine durability at sustained high revs.
The redesigned aluminum twin-spar frame was purpose-built to accept a Showa Big Piston Fork (BPF) and a new rear monoshock — race-proven suspension technology that autoevolution's spec sheet notes arrived alongside radial-mount monoblock four-piston Brembo front calipers gripping dual 310mm discs, with a 220mm rear disc and Nissin two-piston caliper. Suzuki's Drive Mode Selector (SDMS) offered two distinct engine maps selectable at the push of a button, letting riders match power delivery to road conditions or personal preference, while the Suzuki Dual Throttle Valve (SDTV) fuel injection system used eight-hole injectors for smoother, more efficient combustion. A 4-into-1 stainless exhaust with a titanium muffler and Suzuki Exhaust Tuning (SET) valve maximized torque specifically in the low-to-mid rpm range — genuinely useful for a supersport engine that still needs to be tractable on the street. Dry weight settled around 352-359 lbs depending on model year, with this seventh-generation chassis and engine combination running essentially unchanged through 2020.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2011-2020 GSX-R600 running the way it was built to.
