Suzuki GSX-R1000 K5/K6 (2005-2006): The Redesigned “Godzilla” Generation
The K5 is the fifth-generation GSX-R1000, a ground-up redesign of the engine and chassis that launched in the GSX-R’s 20th anniversary year. Magazines called it a huge step up from the K4, and testers praised it as the quickest and easiest litre bike to stuff into a corner. The K5/K6 pair are now prized collectibles, and the engine is so well regarded that Suzuki later based the GSX-S1000’s engine on it. It came in black/grey, blue/white and yellow/black, plus an all-black limited edition. The 2006 K6 changed little beyond new paint schemes, and the 2007 K7 changed the engine again for Euro 3. So don’t mix K5/K6 parts or manuals with K3/K4 or K7/K8 bikes.
The engine is a 998.6cc liquid-cooled DOHC 16-valve four with TSCC heads, a 73.4mm x 59mm bore and stroke and a 12.5:1 compression ratio. Bore grew 0.4mm over the K4’s 988cc engine, with lighter titanium valves and pistons, a reinforced crank and connecting rods, and wider crankcase ventilation. A back-torque-limiting slipper clutch and closer gear ratios are new. It has 44mm throttle bodies with dual valves, fully transistorised ignition and a PAIR emissions system, and makes a claimed 178 hp at 11,000 rpm and about 121 Nm at 9,000 rpm.
The chassis is a new compact aluminium frame with radial-mounted four-piston front calipers on radial master cylinders, and a redesigned Kayaba rear shock with 335mm of stroke. Rake is 23.8 degrees with 96mm of trail, and lighter wheels have thinner spokes, sized 3.50 x 17 front and 6.00 x 17 rear. Claimed dry weight is about 166 kg (365 lbs).
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Suzuki GSX-R1000 K5/K6 running the way it was built to.
