The 999.8cc liquid-cooled inline-four received a genuinely dedicated redesign for 2009 — no longer sharing its fundamental architecture with the GSX-R750 as earlier generations had. 2012 brought the L2 update, which Maintenance Schedule's own breakdown describes as looking, at first glance, like only a brake and muffler change — but going considerably deeper: 11% lighter pistons, a 0.1-point compression bump, and redesigned camshafts specifically aimed at improving low-speed torque and flattening the torque curve rather than chasing more peak horsepower, which stayed at 185 hp. Suzuki also dropped the twin-exhaust design for a single muffler — a genuine weight and cost saving Namuwiki attributes partly to former MotoGP chief engineer Arase's preference — and updated brakes to Brembo calipers with 4x32mm pistons on the same 310mm discs. ABS arrived as an option starting in 2014, the closest this generation came to genuine electronic rider aids before Suzuki's comprehensively reworked 2017 R-spec model introduced ride-by-wire and a full IMU package.
