Classic Motorbikes' own retrospective doesn't dress up the K1's launch-era reputation: it "kicked the arse of the previously dominant Yamaha YZF-R1 into touch — and then kicked it in the goolies for good measure while it begged for mercy." Bennetts' history frames the achievement more soberly but no less decisively: the GSX-R1000 "swept aside everything" that had linked Suzuki's big GSX-Rs to the outdated, heavy 1100cc air/oil-cooled behemoths of the 1990s, taking its real inspiration instead from the sharp, honed 2000 GSX-R750Y — a three-quarter-litre superbike good enough to run with far larger machines.

Power comes from a 988cc liquid-cooled inline-four, DOHC with 16 valves, built by widening the GSX-R750's bore by 1mm and lengthening the stroke by 13mm, paired with newly designed lower-crown pistons and a gear-driven counterbalancer, delivering a claimed 160 hp at 10,800 rpm and roughly 81 lb-ft of torque at 8,500 rpm through a 6-speed manual gearbox. Suzuki's Dual Throttle Valve (SDTV) fuel injection system delivered genuinely smooth, precise throttle response for the era, backed by a Suzuki Exhaust Tuning (SET) butterfly valve in the link pipe — Classic Motorbikes' own review found the result delivered plenty of usable midrange alongside the headline peak numbers. Dry weight came in at a claimed 374-375 lbs, launching the K1 to a genuine 180 mph top speed.

The chassis shared its fundamental twin-spar aluminum frame design with the GSX-R750 but was thickened and reinforced specifically to handle the bigger engine's added weight and power delivery — two engine mounts on each spar instead of the 750's asymmetric single-and-double arrangement. Gold nitride-coated inverted forks and the era's much-debated Tokico six-piston front brake calipers rounded out the launch-spec K1 hardware. The 2002 K2 carried over with largely cosmetic changes — new graphics, a polished stainless exhaust front/mid section, bolt-on bungee hooks — alongside genuine mechanical refinements: updated fuel pump, clutch, front axle, and torque link components, plus a switch from manual fast-idle to a computer-operated "STV servo" system. MCN's own buyer's guide notes a genuine quirk worth knowing for anyone riding one today: the K1/K2's lower overall gearing means it actually outperforms the later K3-K6 models in top gear, despite the newer bikes' higher peak output.
