GSF600/GSF600S Bandit K1/K2 (2000-2002): The "Hooligan Bike" Gets Its First Real Facelift

Wikipedia's own account of the wider Bandit series notes the reputation this platform carved out over the years: "the Bandit series earned a reputation as 'hooligan bikes'" — a genuinely fun, torquey naked middleweight that first launched in 1996, retuning the GSX600F's engine for stronger midrange pull. 2000 brought the model's first significant revamp since that debut, refreshing both the naked GSF600 and half-faired GSF600S variants together.

Power comes from a 599cc air/oil-cooled inline-four, DOHC with 16 valves, delivering a claimed 80 hp at 10,500 rpm and roughly 41 lb-ft (56 Nm) of torque at 9,500 rpm, run through a 6-speed manual gearbox with wet multi-plate clutch and chain final drive, reaching a genuine 131 mph top speed. New carburetors fitted with a throttle position sensor, linked to a more advanced ignition system, replaced the previous fueling setup, alongside an additional fuel filter and a larger fuel tank — genuine mechanical refinements layered onto the proven engine architecture rather than a ground-up redesign.

Autoevolution's own breakdown of the 2000 update details the visual and ergonomic changes that carried through this K1/K2 span: new rear bodywork, a modern-styled twin-headlight fairing on the S variant (improving both aerodynamics and wind protection), a fully electronic instrument panel, and a new frame delivering a genuinely lower seating position — a real comfort improvement over the outgoing generation. Suspension consists of a 41mm oil-damped telescopic fork up front and a rear shock offering four-way rebound and seven-way preload adjustment, with braking handled by dual 290mm front discs and a 240mm rear disc, all gripped by Nissin hydraulic calipers. The 2001 model year (K1) carried these changes forward essentially unchanged, and 2002 (K2) added a standard fuel gauge as the sole notable update — otherwise retaining identical visual, technical, and performance specification. Dry weight sits around 208kg (459 lbs), with a 31.5-inch seat height and 56.4-inch wheelbase.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2000-2002 GSF600/GSF600S Bandit K1/K2 running the way it was built to.
