Grand Vitara (2006-2011): Suzuki's Genuine Ground-Up Reinvention, Right Before an Uncertain Ending

Cars.com's own launch review didn't hold back on the aesthetic transformation: "the new Grand Vitara is one of the best-looking small SUVs on sale today" — a genuinely comprehensive redesign for 2006 that ditched the previous generation's body cladding for cleaner lines and angular headlights, moving off the older ladder-frame-only platform onto a unibody design with an integrated ladder-style frame running through it, a construction approach Suzuki specifically cited as delivering both on-road refinement and off-road durability.

Engine options expanded genuinely across this run. J.D. Power's own model-year history details a real mid-cycle addition: 2009 brought a new inline 4-cylinder twin-cam 2.4-litre engine making a claimed 166 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque, paired with either a 4-speed automatic or manual transmission, running alongside the existing 3.2-litre V6 delivering 230 hp and 213 lb-ft — genuinely strong numbers for a compact SUV of this era, though the V6 was discontinued for the 2011 model year, leaving the four-cylinder as the sole engine choice going forward. Cars.com's own contemporary review noted the ride quality leaned firm and occasionally unforgiving on rough pavement, "in contrast to the carlike rides offered by some competitors" — a genuine trade-off for the platform's real off-road capability.

Year-over-year refinements ran steadily through this generation: 2007 added a standard tire-pressure monitoring system; 2008 brought improved cabin soundproofing, updated climate control, a new sunroof, and a fuel-door release; 2009 paired the new engine option with a refreshed grille, updated interior controls, and a new front bumper; 2010 added standard navigation along with further soundproofing, an automatic climate control system, and a remote fuel-door release, while renaming the Luxury trim to Limited; and 2011 brought Suzuki's NuLink infotainment system on Premium trims (using Google to find local points of interest, fuel prices, weather, and traffic wirelessly), Bluetooth as a standard feature, and 18-inch aluminum wheels on the Limited trim — the final full model year before Suzuki's exit from the US automotive market reshaped the platform's later availability. CARFAX's own reliability data on this generation estimates roughly $700 in expected repair costs over a 12-month span, with genuine parts-sourcing advantages thanks to shared components with related Chevrolet and GMC models from the era.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2006-2011 Grand Vitara running the way it was built to.
