DR-Z400SM (2005-2009): A 49mm RM250-Derived Fork and 17-Inch Street Wheels on Suzuki's Proven DR-Z Platform
Suzuki's own Global Digital Archive describes this bike's genuine origin directly: "based on the DR-Z400S, the DR-Z400SM was developed as an on-road street bike inspired by supermoto. Equipped with a lightweight and compact 400cc 4-stroke liquid-cooled 1-cylinder DOHC engine, the DR-Z400SM is renowned for its power and rideability."
Power comes from a 398cc liquid-cooled single, DOHC with 4 valves, a 90mm x 62.6mm bore and stroke, and an 11.3:1 compression ratio, fed by a BSR36 CV Mikuni carburetor, delivering a claimed 39-40 hp (29kW) at 8,400-8,500 rpm and roughly 24-29 Nm (18-21 lb-ft) of torque at 5,800-6,300 rpm, through a 5-speed manual transmission with wet multi-disc clutch and #520 chain final drive.
Autoevolution's own confirmed chassis account describes the genuine motocross-derived suspension hardware carried into this street-focused machine: "a 49mm inverted Showa fork on the front derived from the RM250 model and a fully adjustable shock on the rear, bolted to a chrome-moly steel frame with a narrow profile" — real race-pedigree componentry rather than a simplified, cost-cut setup. Braking uses a single 310mm front disc with a 2-piston caliper and a 240mm rear disc with a matching caliper, riding on 17-inch wheels wrapped in 120/70 front and 140/70 rear street tires.
Confirmed dimensions list a 1,460mm wheelbase, an 870-890mm seat height, a 2.6-gallon (9.8-10-litre) fuel tank, and dry weight around 133-146kg depending on exact model year and measurement method. Suzuki's own production records confirm both the DR-Z400S and SM stopped production in 2009, closing out this exact range as the final chapter of the carbureted-generation supermoto before the model was discontinued.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2005-2009 DR-Z400SM running the way it was built to.
