DR-Z400S (2000-2009): Motorcycle News' Own Verdict — "A Good Old-Fashioned Plodder," With a 4.2-out-of-5 Owner Reliability Rating

Motorcycle News' own used-buying review is refreshingly direct about the engine's genuine character: "the DR-Z's single cylinder motor is a good old-fashioned plodder and with a double overhead cam, four valves and a water-jacket is hardly being stressed to produce 39bhp and 29ft-lb of torque." That same review confirms real, lived-in reliability data from actual owners: "owners' reliability rating: 4.2 out of 5," with annual servicing costs around £60 — genuinely low running costs for a bike built to handle years of mixed road and off-road use.

Power comes from a 398cc liquid-cooled single, DOHC with 4 valves, a 90mm x 62.6mm bore and stroke, and an 11.3:1 compression ratio, fed by a BSR36 CV Mikuni carburetor, delivering a claimed 39-40 hp (29kW) at 8,400 rpm and roughly 18 lb-ft (24 Nm) of torque at 5,800 rpm through a 5-speed manual transmission with wet multi-disc clutch and chain final drive, reaching a genuine 94 mph (152 km/h) top speed.

Suzuki's own Global Digital Archive confirms what genuinely distinguishes this "S" model from the closely related off-road-only DR-Z400: "a headlight, taillight, turn indicators, mirrors, and an electric start made it suitable for the roads, as well as road-oriented tires" — a real, street-legal dual-sport built specifically for riders who wanted highway capability alongside genuine trail competence. Autoevolution's own confirmed chassis account lists a chromoly steel frame, a telescopic fork with adjustable compression and rebound damping (290mm travel), and a fully adjustable link-type rear shock (295mm travel), braking through a 250mm front disc with a 2-piston caliper and a 220mm rear disc with a 1-piston caliper.

Confirmed dimensions list a 58.5-inch wheelbase, a genuinely tall 36.8-inch (935mm) seat height, a 2.6-gallon (9.8-10-litre) fuel tank, and dry weight ranging 262-317 lbs depending on exact model year, riding on 80/100-21 front and 120/90-18 (or 120/80-18 on later years) tires. Motorcycle News' own confirmed account closes out this range precisely: "production is stopped for the Suzuki DRZ400 S and SM" in 2009.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2000-2009 DR-Z400S running the way it was built to.
