Suzuki launched the DL650 in 2004 as a smaller sibling to the DL1000 V-Strom, expecting it to play second fiddle — instead, the lighter, more agile 650 went on to outsell the litre-class original by two or three to one in most markets. Cosmetically near-identical to the DL1000 but sitting on a lower seat and around 20kg lighter, it built a reputation as unglamorous but relentlessly dependable, the kind of bike Motorcycle News once summed up as "providing honest transport seemingly since the dawn of time."

Power comes from a 645cc liquid-cooled 90-degree V-twin, DOHC with 8 valves and Suzuki's TSCC combustion chamber design, producing a claimed 67 hp at 8,800-9,000 rpm and around 47 lb-ft of torque delivered low and broad in the rev range. The chassis is genuinely bespoke, not a repurposed SV650 unit — a twin-spar aluminum frame and swingarm unique to the V-Strom, with a steeper fork angle than the DL1000 that shortens the wheelbase by roughly 4 inches. A 22-litre fuel tank, shared with the bigger DL1000, gave real-world range well over 200 miles at Suzuki's claimed 45mpg.

2011 marked the final year of this first generation, bringing updated styling and ABS as standard equipment before the model was overhauled in 2017. Dry weight sits around 189kg (417 lbs), with a genuinely accessible 843mm seat height that made the V-Strom 650 a popular choice for smaller or newer riders wanting adventure-bike capability without adventure-bike bulk.
