Suzuki V-Strom 650XT DL650XA (2017-2021): The Spoke-Wheeled, Soft-Adventure V-Strom
The V-Strom 650XT is the version of Suzuki’s popular mid-weight adventure tourer that aims to conquer both tarmac and trails, with DR-BIG-styled aluminum spoke-style wheels (blue anodized aluminum rims laced with stainless steel spokes) that absorb shock from irregular surfaces and accept tubeless tires. It comes with Bridgestone Battlax adventure-spec tubeless radial tires (a 19-inch front and 17-inch rear), handguards and a protective lower engine cowl or skid plate. These features add about 3 inches to the bike’s width (910mm) and about 6 pounds to its weight against the standard 650. Like the standard 650, it has the Easy Start System, Low RPM Assist, Suzuki’s Advanced Traction Control System, and ABS as standard. The US price was $9,299 in 2018-2020 and $9,349 in 2021.
The engine is a 645cc liquid-cooled 90-degree V-twin with DOHC and four valves per cylinder (eight in all), an 81mm x 62.6mm bore and stroke and an 11.2:1 compression ratio. Fuel injection with Suzuki Dual Throttle Valves (SDTV) and Throttle-body Integrated Idle Speed Control (TI-ISC) feeds it, and Suzuki Dual Spark Technology uses two plugs per cylinder. Suzuki claims about 70 hp (69-71) at 8,800-9,500 rpm and about 62 Nm (46 lb-ft) of torque at 6,500-8,000 rpm. The gearbox is a six-speed with chain final drive.
The chassis has a twin-spar frame, non-adjustable conventional forks and a link-type monoshock adjustable for preload, with a 26-degree rake and 110mm of trail. Brakes are dual 310mm front discs with two-piston calipers and a 260mm rear disc with a one-piston caliper, with ABS. Tires are a 110/80R19 (59V) at the front and a 150/70R17 (69V) at the rear. Wheelbase is 1,560mm (61.4 inches), and ground clearance is about 165-170mm.
The XT is about 2,275mm (89.6 inches) long, 910mm (35.8 inches) wide and 1,405mm high. Seat height is about 830-835mm (32.7-32.9 inches). The tank holds 20 litres (5.3 gallons). The XT weighs about 216 kg (476 lbs) wet, against 213 kg (470 lbs) for the standard V-Strom 650.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a DL650XA V-Strom 650XT running the way it was built to.
