Suzuki DL650 / DL650A V-Strom (2017-2021): The Easygoing Adventure-Touring V-Twin
The V-Strom 650, nicknamed the “Wee-Strom,” is a mid-weight adventure tourer renowned for versatility, reliability and value, popular with riders who tour, commute or ride for fun. The 2017 bike has a new slimmer fuel tank and seat for a more comfortable reach to the ground, new series-common V-Strom styling (with the beak-like front) and an improved equipment list. It gained Suzuki’s Easy Start System (a single touch of the starter button) and Low RPM Assist, which lifts the revs slightly as the clutch is engaged to help prevent a stall, plus a new fuel injection system to meet Euro 4. The ABS model has Suzuki’s Advanced Traction Control System, which monitors front and rear wheel speed, throttle opening, engine speed and the selected gear and cuts engine output if it detects wheel spin. The XT has spoked wheels, handguards and a bash plate for more off-road ability.
The engine is a 645cc liquid-cooled 90-degree V-twin with DOHC and four valves per cylinder (eight in all), an 81mm x 62.6mm bore and stroke and an 11.2:1 compression ratio. Fuel injection with Suzuki Dual Throttle Valves (SDTV) feeds it, and the cylinder heads have dual spark plugs for better combustion efficiency. Suzuki claims about 71 hp (53 kW) at 8,800-9,500 rpm and about 62 Nm (46 lb-ft) of torque at 6,500-8,000 rpm. The gearbox is a six-speed with chain final drive, and fuel economy is about 60 mpg.
The frame is a diamond type with a rake of 26 degrees and about 110mm (4.3 inches) of trail. Brakes are dual 310mm front discs with two-piston calipers and a single 260mm rear disc with a one-piston caliper, with ABS. Tires are a 110/80R19 at the front and a 150/70R17 at the rear. The wheelbase is 1,560mm (61.4 inches), and ground clearance is about 165-170mm (6.5-6.7 inches).
The V-Strom 650 is about 2,275-2,290mm (90 inches) long, 835mm (32.9 inches) wide (910mm on the XT) and 1,405mm (55.3 inches) high. Seat height is 835mm (32.9 inches). The tank holds 20 litres (5.3 gallons). The V-Strom 650 weighs about 213 kg (470 lbs) wet, and the XT about 216 kg.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a DL650 V-Strom running the way it was built to.
