Suzuki DL1000 V-Strom 2002-2012 Service Manual

Introduced in 2002 as a replacement for the DR800S, the DL1000 V-Strom set out to prove a big-bore dual-sport could carry real touring comfort without losing its sporty edge — a formula built directly on the V-twin from Suzuki's TL1000S and TL1000R sportbikes, detuned and re-engineered for the long haul. Updates came fast in the early years: 2003 brought a fully adjustable front fork, a more durable seat cover, and a bump in alternator output from 350 to 400 watts.

The most significant styling update landed in 2005, when the frame, swingarm, rear frame covers, and cast wheels all switched to a black finish — a look Suzuki then left completely unchanged for the remainder of the model's run through 2012. The 996cc liquid-cooled 90-degree V-twin, DOHC with 8 valves and TSCC combustion chambers, delivered a consistent claimed 98 hp around 7,400-7,600 rpm and roughly 74 lb-ft of torque at 6,400 rpm across the entire production span, through a 6-speed gearbox and aluminum twin-spar frame.

European sales wound down in 2009, though the DL1000 continued in other markets through 2012, including a Canada-market SE variant that final year, before the model was fully reengineered for 2014 with a lighter frame and new 1037cc engine. Dry weight sits around 207kg (456 lbs), with a 22-litre fuel tank and genuinely long-legged 840mm seat height that defined the big-bore adventure-touring segment for a generation.
